Attorney General Merrick B. Garland is the public face of the government’s unprecedented effort to identify, arrest, and prosecute those connected to the Jan. 6, 2021 protest at the Capitol. But the person handling the day-to-day management of the one of the largest and most politically freighted efforts in the history of American law enforcement has largely flown under the radar: Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.

Instead of going on TV or Twitter to fight, my priority is working with my colleagues to find real solutions. We need to do more than just keep the government open — we also need to address our overwhelming $33 trillion national debt. Our debt keeps climbing, putting our children’s futures in jeopardy. More than that, it’s putting our national security in jeopardy.

This decision is particularly abhorrent given the conservative victories that have been achieved this year under Speaker McCarthy – including the largest spending cut in the history of our nation alongside the biggest reforms to America’s welfare system in two decades signed into law.

I voted yes on the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act, a conservative solution to slash wasteful government spending, secure the border, and keep the government open for 45 days while we continue to debate and pass our funding bills. Every single Democrat in the House voted against it, killing an opportunity to secure our border.
