Bill Damron took the reins of the McClain football program in the fall of 1963, as  51 boys reported for the opening practice. Overall, the team would be slightly bigger than the 1962 team, but team speed was still mediocre at best. Dale Allen, Jim Legg, Fred Raike, George Barnes and Sam Borst would serve as Damron’s assistant coaches.

It’s hard to believe we have reached the end of October and we have such a small percentage of the corn and soybean crop that has been harvested. While every year is unique, 2009 is certainly going to linger in the memory banks of most farmers.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Amvets Hall, 11539 N. Shore Road, Hillsboro, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Waw-wil-a-way Chapter will welcome as guest of the Amvets Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol and veterans interested in learning about “Honor Flight.”

The lights have gone out for the year on Friday nights in Highland County, and this sports editor is saddened by that fact of life.
