Highland County’s America 250 Committee approves time capsule project

Highland County’s America 250 Committee has approved a time capsule project as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A time capsule will be buried under one of the sidewalks on the court house square in conjunction with renovations on the exterior of the building expected to commence in late July.

The capsule will be 36 inches in diameter and 36 inches in height. It will be buried in the ground and have a marker on the surface commemorating the project.

The committee is asking for civic and non-profit organizations, schools, businesses, churches, governmental offices, and other organizations to provide items relating to their activities or functions to be placed in the time capsule which will be opened in 2086. The items should reflect their status in 2026. The committee recommends that items such as photographs, paper brochures and similar items be laminated or sealed in another matter to prevent deterioration over the next fifty years.

Anyone or any group that would like to have an item included in the time capsule should drop it off at the Highland County Visitors Bureau office at 129 North High St., Hillsboro or at the Highland County Common Pleas Court at the court house.
