The Greenfield Historical Society will hold its annual History Day on Oct. 4 at the Grain & Hay Building on East Jefferson Street, Greenfield. The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Society volunteers are busily making plans for the event.
New displays are being prepared including a display of women’s military uniforms in the society’s collection in the Tannery. This will include several uniforms donated to the society by Martha Caldwell as well as a uniform worn by Libby Bartley.
In the Grain & Hay, there will be a display featuring photos by Heber L. Jones, a photographer between 1899 and 1925. It will included information on his life and several of his larger photographs.
The B&O Depot will be open for visitors to see the Adams Greenfield Through the Years display. Tom will be on hand to share Greenfield’s history and his experiences of building the display.
Wendy Royse will share the history of Conestoga wagons and our Wilson wagon in the Red Barn. Also on display in the barnyard will be the society’s Ahrens-Fox firetruck, buggies, Browder lifesaving net, and farming tools.
As in previous History Days Mike and Kathy Mincey will be on hand demonstrating cider making. Their free samples are always popular. Jayne Honnold is looking forward to sharing her skill at quilting and Shirley King will be on hand to share her colored pencil painting skill. Silas Soards will be playing the pump organ in the Smith Tannery during the afternoon.
The society will have a booth of surplus historical books and papers from its collection for people to read and purchase. There will also be old Dragon yearbooks for sale mostly dating from 1920-60 plus a few other ones, along with other yard sale items which were donated to the society from members. Joining this booth this year will be Rob Rowland with some of his welding projects for sale and Michelle Rowland with her craft items for sale. Plans are also being made for MHS Arts Honor Society booth again this year.
Food for the day will include Chris Dodd’s smoked pork loin which has been a favorite at past History Days. Also, the society’s bean soup will be served. Hot dogs, chips, desserts and drinks will round out the menu for the day.
Stop by the Grain & Hay Saturday, Oct. 4 for a day of history, friendship and food.
