Hillsboro artist Avery Applegate may reach a national audience Wednesday, Sept. 7, as members of her family will be featured in a segment of an episode of “Buried Treasure,” a new series on FOX. Applegate organized the show appearance on behalf of her cousin, Kathy (Willman) Cline, and her husband, Larry. Kathy Cline is the daughter of the late Dave and Norma Willman and lived in Hillsboro along with her parents as a child.

A bridge replacement project on state Route 131 in Brown County has been completed, and lane restrictions have been lifted.

A 65-year-old Hillsboro man was sentenced to 22 year in prison Friday following his conviction this week in Highland County Common Pleas Court on charges of felonious assault and aggravated burglary. 

Jimmie Jacobs appeared in court Friday with his attorney Jim Boulger. On Thursday, a jury deliberated for just over five hours before convicting Jacobs of shooting Jonathan Harris on Dec. 15, 2010, causing Harris to sustain  severe injuries, including the loss of one of his eyes. 

A jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court deliberated for just over five hours Thursday before returning a not guilty verdict on an attempted murder charge; and guilty verdicts on charges of second-degree felonious assault and aggravated burglary.
 Jimmie Jacobs, 65, was indicted in March on one count of attempted murder with a gun specification, a felony of the first degree; one count of felonious assault with a gun specification, a felony of the second degree; and one count of aggravated burglary with a gun specification, a felony of the first degree.

The same road on which a solemn processional brought a fallen soldier home has now been dedicated by the Ohio Legislature in his honor.  
 A 12-mile stretch of U.S. 50 between Hillsboro and Rainsboro has been dedicated the PFC Zachary Gullett Memorial Highway.  
 Gullett, 20, was serving with the 984th Military Police Company in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq on May 1, 2007, when he collapsed and died.

A Hillsboro man testified Wednesday about how a gun was put to his head and the trigger was pulled, permanently blinding him in one eye, and causing life-threatening injuries, following an alleged dispute with a neighbor over a $2,000 loan.
  Jonathan Harris, 28, testified in Highland County Common Pleas Court that Jimmie Jacobs, 65, entered his Hillsboro on Dec. 15, 2010, and shot him in the face.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel launched the new www.OhioTreasurer.gov website today that for the first time in Ohio government history includes a fully searchable state employee salary database with updated 2011 figures. This is the first time that an Ohio elected official has posted such comprehensive information online in such a user-friendly and searchable manner.

Oral arguments will be held before the seven Justices of the Supreme Court at 9 a.m. at the Highland County Courthouse, 105 N. High St., in Hillsboro. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor will preside and be joined by Justices Paul E. Pfeifer, Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Terrence O’Donnell, Judith Ann Lanzinger, Robert R. Cupp and Yvette McGee Brown.

Ohio Republican Senator Tim Grendell has proposed legislation that would require drug testing for residents applying for public assistance. Similar legislation has been introduced in Florida and is being considered in other states.

Construction for two separate resurfacing projects in Highland County will get under way next month as contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation have set their schedule and begun making site preparations.
