In defense of recycling
To the editor:
I have noticed in the Feb. 3, 2024 issue of The Highland County Press, that Mr. Jim Thompson mentions recycling.
Is that just another one of his pet peeves?
I've been recycling for years and made a few thousand dollars at it, kept hundreds – if not thousands – of pounds of scrap metal out of our local landfill, and removed numerous unwanted items from the homes and yards of my neighbors.
Might Jim call me an "environmental wacko?" I hope so.
I'm afraid his articles are not one of the reasons that I enjoy reading The Highland County Press.
Sincerely,
Pete Kieffer

Not All is Recycled
Yes Mario that is correct. 1n 2012. I attended the City of San Rafael Planning Academy workshop. One stop was the local trash hauler recycle company that served Marin County and the city. Bales of bottled water or plastic soda bottles and cardboard which had been shipped to China were buried in Northern California landfills. The market in China had dropped and container rates also had risen. It was lawful to just bury it. Want to be green? Buy a refillable water bottle. Airports, many parks, and water fountains now abound. Makes no sense to buy single use water bottles. Minimal impact with refillable. Only when you clean it. Plus a stainless water bottle makes a handle weapon for self defense.
Misconceptions About Recycling
People assume all the recyclables they put in the "recycle" bins are recycled. The fact is, MOST RECYCLABLES ARE NOT RECYCLED. They are put in the garbage landfills along with all your other garbage... because they are things waste companies can’t make money off.
