    Judge Coss outlines added expenses for capital murder trial

    Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss informed Commissioners Tom Horst and Gary Heaton Wednesday of the additional expenses related to the capital murder case of Wesley Coonrod scheduled for October. Commission President Shane Wilkin was not in attendance due to an illness. Coss' preliminary estimate for added costs was $48,280. Coss said that was a "conservative" estimate.

    State Route 41 north in Ross County had been closed near the 13-mile marker due to an accident involving a semi-tractor trailer. It is now open.

    Commission: AEP not closing Hillsboro center
    In a relatively abbreviated June 9 meeting, the Highland County Commission dispelled concerns that the Hillsboro AEP Service Center may be in the process of shutting down and relocating its personnel to the AEP Seaman Service Center. With no appointments on the calendar at Wednesday's meeting, Commissioner Gary Heaton said there have been recent rumors that AEP was closing its Service Center in Hillsboro. Heaton said this week that AEP's community affairs manager, Jon Buck, informed him AEP is not closing the local center.

    Brown, Voinovich request full funding for Piketon cleanup
    U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and George V. Voinovich wrote to Senate Leadership requesting full funding for decommissioning and decontamination (D&D) activities for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS) in the Fiscal Year 2011 Energy and Water Development appropriations bill. The letter was sent to Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Bob Bennett (R-WY), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, respectively, according to a news release from Brown.

    Annual public safety day June 13
    The Highland County Firefighters Association will be hosting the 14th Annual Public Safety Day on Sunday, June 13. Held from noon to 3 p.m., the event will take place at the Hillsboro Kroger Store, 575 Harry Sauner Rd.
    There will be numerous fire trucks, life squads and police vehicles on display. Departments attending will include the Hillsboro, PaintCreek, Leesburg, Lynchburg, Mowrystown, Brushcreek and Marshall fire and life squads, as well as the Hillsboro Police Dept, Highland County Sheriff, Greenfield Police Department, Lynchburg Police Department, Leesburg Police Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, DARE, Mt Orab Fire Dept, New Vienna Fire Department, and the Highland County Emergency Management Agency.
    Activities will include an auto extraction demonstration by the Leesburg Fire Department, the fingerprinting of children by the Leesburg Police Department, a hazardous materials display by the EMA. Children will be allowed to spray water with the assistance of the Hillsboro and Mowrystown fire departments.  
    Helicopters from Medflight & LIFE Air will also be at the event, although emergencies may keep them away.
    The Highland County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit will be at the event from  1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    The fire pup will also be in attendance, and there will be blood pressure checks, picture displays, free safety handouts, are some other events during the day. Music will be provided by Pokey's D J and Karoke Service. Snacks will be served and there will be games for the kids. There will also be a safety trailer, to help show children what they should do in a smoke-filled environment. The Highland County Dog Pound volunteers will have information about the adoption program.  
    “We encourage everyone to come out and get to know your local emergency workers” said Scott Miller, President of HCFFA.
    This year child participants will be given a chance to win a bike, or adults could win a $50 Kroger card.  Each person who attends will be given a card that they will have to get marked when they go see a fire truck, life squad, police car or see a demonstration. There are a total of 20 events to get checked off. After their card is completed they will drop it off at the D.J. booth and at 3 p.m. the winners will be drawn.
    Other upcoming events includ: Fish Fry July 2-3. Money raised from the fry will help fund some specialized trainings for our county firefighters.  It will be held from 11 to 7 each day and will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hillsboro. The Hillsboro Fire Department will also hold its 7th Annual Kroger Klassic Car Show on July 31 and it will be at Hobart.

    Cincinnati firm pitches energy efficiency plan to commissioners
    Commissioners met with Rick Anderson and associates from the Cincinnati-based Perfection Group regarding an energy audit of the county-owned buildings at their June 2 meeting. Anderson, who said he'd met with the county commission "1 1/2 or 2 years ago," explained state and federal legislative changes that could make it easier for government entities to borrow money for more energy-efficient operations.
