President Obama’s approval rating has dropped to an all-time low, now below 40 percent, according to a Gallup poll, conducted Aug. 11-13.

The Highland County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. in the commissioners’ meeting room at 119 Governor Foraker Place, Hillsboro, to discuss a board appointment.

Sen. Rob Portman has been named to the powerful new congressional committee charged with finding ways to reduce the U.S. budget deficit by at least $1.5 trillion over 10 years. Portman, R-Terrace Park, was selected by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, along with Senators Jon Kyl of Arizona and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania for the 12-member panel.

The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, in Room 104 of the college’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The purpose of the special meeting is to hold executive session for the purpose of discussing the purchase of property.

The former Village of Trimble in Athens County fiscal officer stole $61,866 from the village and was issued findings for recovery in 2007-2009 audit released this week by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

 Former Trimble Fiscal Officer Debra Berry had a set salary of $700 per month. During the audit period, Berry cashed 151 additional checks written to her totaling $61,866.

"Please note that nothing in the Ohio Revised Code requires HCSO to provide security to the fairgrounds,” Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins said. “In fact, the only county property HCSO is required to provide security for is the Highland County Courthouse. Additionally, pursuant to statute and case law, HCSO is not required to patrol the county or ferret out crime as a detective; HCSO is only required to respond to specific calls."
