Lions fall to Astros

LEES CREEK - Tying the game in the top of the seventh wasn't enough for the Fairfield Lions Saturday afternoon. With the scored deadlocked at five headed into the bottom of the seventh the East Clinton Astros used small ball to defend their home field, defeating the Lions 6-5.
The non-league affair saw the Lions score two runs in the fifth and three in the six. FHS gave up one run in the first, three in the fourth and one each in the final two innings to their neighboring county rival.
Grant Woods scored first for the Astros with a run in the first.
East Clinton plated three runs in the fourth to gain a four-run lead.
The Lions scored their first runs of the non-league contest in the top of the fifth with Sammy Williams starting the inning by being hit by a pitch. Williams was replaced with Michael Carson as a pinch runner. Carson responded by stealing second and took third on an infield error, allowing Bobby Wilson to take first.
Miller grounded out to first to score Carson, gaining the RBI. Tyler Campbell had an RBI base hit to score Wilson.
East Clinton added to their lead with Woods scoring another run for a 5-2 advantage after six innings.
Fairfield rallied in the top of the seventh with three runs to make the score 5-5.
The top of the inning began with Wilson on a one-out single. Campbell singled with two outs to give the Lions two base runners.
Dakota Hargrave had the hit of the day for the Lions as he tripled in Wilson and Campbell. Hargrave scored on the same sequence as he took home on an errant throw to third.
But the Astros rallied back and took the win.
Bean singled, followed with teammate Zack Bosier taking first on a base hit. Nate Witemper had a sacrifice bunt, advancing Bean to third. Ison singled in the game-winning run, scoring Bean from third.
The loss was charged to Kyle Carson. Carson pitched 2 1-3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, no walks and one hit batter. Carson finished with two strikeouts.
Nathaniel Miller started the game on the mound for the Lions. He pitched four innings allowing four runs (none earned) on four hits and six walks. Miller hit two batters and struck out three.
Campbell led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Wilson and Hargrave each went 2-for-4. Hargrave also had two RBIs.
FHS now stands at 4-2 overall. In Southern Hills League play, the Lions are 4-0.
