WEST UNION - The Fairfield Lady Lions dropped a 3-2 decision to the West Union Lady Dragons in a Southern Hills League game played Friday afternoon at West Union High School.
The game featured two of the top pitchers in the Southern Hills League in West Union junior Alexandra Bowles and Fairfield sophomore Lauren Larrick. Both pitchers combined to strike out 24 batters on the afternoon.
Bowles kept the Lady Lion batters off balance all afternoon, limiting the Lady Lions to one run in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth. At one point, Bowles struck out six straight Lady Lion batters.
Larrick limited the Lady Dragons to just three hits and no runs through six innings. At one point, Larrick struck out seven out of eight batters.
Even with the pitching performance from Larrick, the Lady Lion defense had trouble closing out the game in the seventh inning.
Holding a 2-0 lead, the Lady Lions committed three errors that led to three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
FHS scored in the top of the fourth inning, as Danielle Butler led off the inning with an infield single.
Abby Thackston laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Butler to third base. The ensuing throw to third was wild, allowing Butler to score.
Whitney Hanenkrat followed with a triple over the right fielder’s head, then Larrick reached first on a bunt single. Bowles worked out of the jam, sending the Lady Lions back to the dugout with two straight strikeouts.
FHS scored another run in the top of the fifth inning.
With two outs and the bases empty, Heather Huff singled to left field and took second on the throw back to the infield. Huff stole third and scored on an RBI-single to right field by Butler.
Larrick, who was charged with the loss, went 6 2-3 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on three hits and four walks. Larrick struck out 10 batters.
"Lauren Larrick pitched well and deserved a better fate," FHS assistant coach Tom Purtell said.
Bowles went seven innings in the circle. She allowed six hits, two runs (two earned) no walks, and tallied 14 strikeouts.
The loss drops FHS to 3-2 overall.
