Fairfield adds weekend victories; Cannon sends Lions to win at buzzer against Cedarville

Over the weekend, the Fairfield Lions stayed undefeated on the season as they earned wins on Friday and Saturday night by dominating the West Union Dragons on Friday night, followed by a win at the buzzer Saturday night at Cedarville.
The win on Saturday night saw Tytis Cannon grab a rebound off a missed free throw and put the ball through the hoop as time expired to give the Lions a 59-57 win in non-conference play on Jan. 7.
Not only did Cannon score the game-winning points, he was booming the entire game when it came to scoring points, finishing with 33 points in the Saturday night win. Cannon finished with seven 3-pointers and overall (including 3-pointers) was 13-of-19 from the field, while also collecting six rebounds, three assists and one block.
The Lions trailed 19-13 at the completion of the first quarter and trailed 38-21 at halftime. FHS played better in the second half where they outscored Cedarville 16-12 in the third frame and 22-7 in the fourth quarter.
Other final scoring for the Lions included Wyatt Collins with seven points, Trey House with seven points, TJ Mootz with six points, and with three points each were Gunner Bennington and Larkin Friend.
Friday night saw the Lions win in Southern Hills Athletic Conference Action over West Union, 73-32 in a convincing road victory.
From the start, the Lions controlled the pace with a 27-4 first-quarter lead, and following a 23-10 second quarter in favor of the Lions, the away team led 50-14. In the third, it was the Lions scoring 20 points, while West Union scored 14 points. The final quarter had a combined seven points, with WUHS scoring four points and the Lions tallying three points.
Cannon led the way with 26 points, while Friend and Mootz each totaled 11 points. Also for Fairfield, Collins totaled nine points, and with five points each were Bennington and Cade Miller. The rest of the Lions’ scoring included two points each by Gabe Fouch, House and Janre Lerio.
FHS made five 3-pointers with two each from Mootz and Cannon, plus one made trey by Collins.
Bennington and Friend each led FHS with 10 rebounds apiece, giving Friend a double-double.
The two wins puts the Lions at 5-0 in the SHAC and 9-0 overall.
Next for Fairfield is a game Tuesday, Jan. 10 at home in SHAC action vs. Peebles.
