The Southern State Singers will begin rehearsals for the 2011-12 season 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Room 107 of Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

Ten-year-old Sarah Rose Thatcher will be the featured guest for a Meet-the-Artist event 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) on Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The Hillsboro FFA attended the Ohio Leadership Conference FFA Camp on June 24-27.

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter attended Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in Carroll County. The chapter took 12 members who all enjoyed a great week. The theme at camp was Unlock the Mystery, to follow up with the theme camp staff and state officers had a case that needed to be solved.

The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will meet 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Room 106 of the college’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

Happy Johnson will share his journey from being homeless to a nationally prominent advocate for society’s forgotten at Wilmington College Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.

The 43rd graduating class of Southern State Community College’s practical nursing program was honored during a special pinning ceremony held Aug. 12 in the college’s Central Campus auditorium. Five students were recognized for completion of the college’s one-year certificate program.

Amanda Masters received the Anne E. Fender Scholarship, established by Anne and Donald Fender. Shawna Johnson received the Lena H. Rosselot Scholarship. This scholarship was established with a gift from Leana Rosselot, past board member.

Southern Hills Career and Technical Center was represented at Buckeye Boys State by Anthony Sharp, a senior in automotive technology program. Buckeye Boys State is a nine-day hands-on experience in the operation of the republican form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government.

Students and staff in the Bright Local School District returned to their classes this past Wednesday, and are excited to get back in the swing of things this fall. This fall, both the high school, and elementary will be working together to staff the Bright Food Pantry located in the old Concord School House.
