MOWRYSTOWN — Being in the process of rebuilding their girls basketball program, the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats were hurt by turnovers against a tough Ripley team who pressured them on defense and didn't miss many shots, in a 64-26 Southern Hills League loss Thursday night at WHS.
Ripley opened the first quarter with a 3-pointer, which turned into a lead of 22-5 for the visiting Lady Blue Jays after eight minutes.
They were led in scoring for the night by Tori Boone. Boone led all scorers with 16 points, including seven two-point baskets and 2-of-3 effort from the free-throw line. All of her points were scored in the first two quarters.
"We have to work, focus on the defensive end of limiting the opponent to just one shot," WHS head coach Mike Cooper said. "We have to make sure we rebound better and take better care of the basketball."
In the opening eight minutes, the first WHS points came with a basket by Amber Gorman. Also adding points to the Whiteoak side of the scoreboard in the first were Clarissa Johnson and Jessie Gilliland. Gilliland led the Lady 'Cats in scoring with nine points.
The second quarter was a little better for the improving Whiteoak squad with Jayde Parr breaking out with six of the eight points scored by the home team. The other two points in the quarter for WHS were scored by Brittany Luman. Parr was the second-highest WHS scorer with seven points.
For Ripley, they added one point to their overall lead as they led by 18 points at halftime (they led by 17 points after the first quarter) for a 31-13 advantage.
With control of the game, Ripley added 20 more points to their total in the third frame with Lydia Hamilton scoring six of those points.
The biggest impact of the third in favor of the Lady Blue Jays was that they began the second half with a 10-2 run within the first three minutes of the quarter, forcing a WHS timeout.
"We are a young, inexperienced team, but our guards have to take better care of the ball," Cooper said. "They know that, and they understand all the pressure is on them to handle the ball. We just have to do a better job of taking care of it."
Taylor Fyffe added four points in the third, and five more players added a combined 10 points for a 51-18 advantage. Scoring for WHS in the third were Gilliland with four of the five points and Marissa Bohl.
The bright spot in the final eight minutes for the Lady 'Cats was a 3-pointer by Gilliland with 4:42 left on the clock.
WHS finished the night with 23 turnovers.
"Turnovers and rebounding (hurt us), and let's face it, Ripley can flat-out shoot the ball," Cooper said. "When I coached at Ripley, those are some of the kids that were in the junior high program. They are a great group of kids … we got down and just couldn't get going."
Whiteoak falls to 0-3 with the loss (0-1, SHL), and Ripley moves to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the SHL.
"The kids had great effort, and they are ready to practice," Cooper said. "It's just getting that experience, and we understand we have a tough road ahead of us. We have a tough schedule, we're going to keep practicing and hopefully it pays off in February for us."
The Lady 'Cats will play again on Thursday, Dec. 8 as they host the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors with JV starting at 6 p.m.
