MOWRYSTOWN — The Manchester Lady Greyhounds pressured the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats Monday evening at Whiteoak High School. Unable to handle the basketball, the Lady 'Cats were forced into over 30 turnovers, leading to a 60-44 Southern Hills League loss to the Lady Greyhounds.

WHS committed 33 turnovers, and when WHS would commit a turnover, the Lady Greyhounds would capitalize and score.

"We put up points, but we turned over the ball way too many times," WHS head coach Mike Cooper said. "When you turn the ball over that many times, you can't win. We can't give teams extra possessions."

WHS trailed by just four points after the first quarter at 12-8, and they were the first to score in the SHL affair when McKenzee Martin converted a free throw .33 seconds into the game.

After the initial free-throw conversion, Manchester took over, never trailing for the remainder of the game.

MHS answered with points from Katie Little and JaCinda Thompson. Little gave MHS the lead with a three-point play .10 seconds after the first point as scored, followed with Thompson making two free throws and Little adding two more points with fast break points to give MHS a 7-1 lead with 5:35 left on the clock.

The Lady 'Cats countered with three baskets from Ashley Crone, Brooke Burns and Lizz Carson, tying the game at seven, leaving 2:37 left in the quarter.

Free throws by Hayley Rideout, four in a row, put MHS up 11-7. Burns and Chelsye Cooper exchanged free throws to end the frame.

Shots from the free-throw line came up important for both teams as they combined to shoot a total of 64 shots from the foul line in the game. For the game, MHS was 21-of-38 and WHS was 14-of-27.

Trailing by four points after the first quarter, WHS was unable to put together consistent offense in the second frame as they were outscored 11-6. WHS made just one shot from the field in the eight minute frame, coming with .19 seconds left in the first half by Martin. Jessie Gilliland and Crone each made two free throws in the quarter.

Rideout led in the second frame with six points, making three buckets. Haylee Adams sank three free throws, and Becky Day completed the scoring in the first half with a two-point basket.

For the game, Rideout led in scoring with 19 points, the game-high. Gilliland led WHS with 18 points.

Gilliland, a junior, broke out in the second half, scoring 10 points in the third frame and six points in the fourth quarter.

"In the first half, we did a good job rebounding," Cooper said. "(Monday) I thought we did a better job of blocking out and that kept us in the game, we just couldn't limit their second-chance shots. That was the difference in the game."

The third frame was full of scoring, with a combined 38 points, as the Lady Greyhounds outscored WHS 21-17.

MHS started the third with an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 32-16. Scoring in the run for the Lady Greyhounds were Day, Cooper, Rideout and Thompson. During that run, the Lady 'Cats were forced into turnovers due to the pressure caused by the Lady Greyhounds' pressure defense.

Burns gave the Lady 'Cats their fourth point of the third with a put-back bucket, leaving 4:25 in the quarter. After regaining possession, following their sixth turnover of the quarter, WHS regrouped with points from Gilliland, but again, the Lady Greyhounds were there to take control.

Manchester finished the final 1:33 of the third by outscoring WHS 8-4, including a 3-pointer by Adams. MHS led 44-31 after three quarters.

MHS continued to use their pressure defense throughout the entire fourth quarter as they scored 16 points in the final eight minutes. WHS scored 13 points in the fourth. Scoring for WHS in the final frame were Gilliland, Haley Bingamon, Martin, Carson and Brittany Waits. For MHS, scoring in the fourth were Little, Cooper, Rideout and Day.

Little finished with 11 points. For WHS, Crone scored six points, followed by Burns and Martin with five points. Carson scored four points.

"Our girls didn't give up, and playing that way will pay off," Cooper said. "Our girls will not give up. We have another three weeks in the regular season, and we need to keep getting better ad make a run in the tournament."

The loss drops WHS to 1-13 overall and 1-8 in the SHL. MHS improves to 5-5 in the SHL, and 5-10 overall.

In the JV game, MHS won 29-19. For WHS, Brandy McClure, Brittany Luman and Brittini Vanzant each scored four points. For MHS, Haylee Adams led with eight points, and Rainelle Casey scored six.[[In-content Ad]]
