DODSONVILLE — A third-quarter rush of points and defense, along with multiple slam dunks by junior Doc Seip, were more than enough for the Whiteoak Wildcats on Thursday evening in the opener of the 2011-12 Wilkin Scholarship Tournament. WHS used their second half to break away for a 66-50 victory against the Clermont Northeastern Rockets.
The win sends the Wildcats (3-4) to the finals of the two-day tournament as they will take on Lynchburg-Clay, who defeated Paint Valley 70-48 in the nightcap on Thursday.
In their meeting on Dec. 16, LC defeated the Wildcats 60-53 at WHS.
As for WHS, the entire landscape of the game changed in the third frame as they outscored the Rockets 19-10 in the third for a 52-37 lead headed into the final frame, allowing them to break a three-game losing skid.
"We lost a couple early on, so we switched to man-to-man, and we did a nice job of getting the ball out in open looks," WHS head coach Tom Wessner said. "(On Thursday) we did a much better job of handing the ball and not making a lot of unforced turnovers like we have been doing.
"For us, when we have those turnovers, we get no shots, and without a high number of shots we'll have the low point totals."
Luke Taggert began the third with points in the paint, and after a short run by CNE, it was Taggert again who took control with a 3-pointer, two free throws and for good measure a jumper in a span of two minutes, extending the WHS lead to 11 points at 44-33. His run consisted of seven straight points, as Taggert ended the game with 16 points in three quarters.
That was the start of what turned into a 15-2 run to end the frame as junior Doc Seip had multiple dunks in the quarter, including a one-handed slam and an alley-oop two-handed dunk which put WHS up 48-33 with 1:35 left in the quarter.
He took the ball to the hoop again with 57.7 left in the frame for six straight points, helping put the Wildcats ahead 52-35. Seip finished with a game-high 20 points as he didn't play for a majority of the fourth frame.
"Doc had a nice game," Wessner said. "We are working on his positioning. We've been stressing over where he needs to be, and (Thursday) he did a great job of that."
Also scoring in double figures for WHS was Zach Docter with 12 points.
WHS led 17-14 after the first frame, due in large part to seven points by Taggert, including a 3-pointer and two two-point buckets. Docter added four points in the opening frame, as did Seip. Gage Carraher scored two points in the first frame, finishing the night with eight total points.
The Wildcats took a five-point lead into the locker room at halftime with six players contributing to the cause in the final eight minutes of the opening half. Scoring for WHS in the second were Blake Trublood, Docter, Steven Meyers, Justin Butler, Seip and Taggert.
WHS had the game in their control entering the fourth frame with five players adding to their lead in Trublood, Docter, Butler, Seip and four free throws by Carraher.
"Gage had a good game handling the ball for us," Wessner said. "That was real big and key for us in this game."
For the Rockets, they were led in scoring by Alex Gilkerson with 18 points, followed by Lucas Wolfe with 10. All 18 points from Gilkerson came via the 3-point shot. Gilkerson sank four 3-pointers in the opening quarter.
Jay Teaney followed with eight, and Derrik Schmidt added six points.
CNE will take on Paint Valley at 6 p.m. on Friday in the consolation game at LCHS.
