BAINBRIDGE - Breakdowns in the first inning by the Whiteoak Wildcats was too much for them to battle back from Wednesday at Paint Valley High School. With the bases loaded in the final inning the Wildcats were unable to tie the game as they dropped their non-league game to the Bearcats 12-8.
The Bearcats opened the bottom half of the first inning with seven runs to take the commanding seven-run lead after keeping WHS scoreless in the top part of the first.
"We had multiple defensive breakdowns in the first, which opened up the flood gates for (Paint Valley)," Whiteoak head coach Chris Veidt said. "Our kids did a fantastic job of battling back. They are fighters; there is no quit in them."
Whiteoak (1-0, 1-1) put two on the board in the top of the third but allowed the Bearcats to score once in the bottom of the same inning, giving PV an 8-2 advantage.
PV tacked on three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
For the Wildcats, they scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh inning.
"We ended the game with the bases loaded, but we hit a line drive to their (PV) left fielder to end the game," Veidt said.
From the plate Zach Docter, Mike Carraher and Jesse Bradds each went 2-for-3. Docter had two RBIs and one run. Carraher hit a double and Bradds had two doubles, also scoring one run.
Wes Stratton was 2-for-2 with two runs.
Ethan Eyre and Corey Hughes each had one hit. Eyre scored one run, while knocking in a run as well. Hughes had one run.
"Gage Carraher, Zach Docter, Wesley Stratton and Jesse Bradds looked good at the plate," Veidt said.
Garett Tyree gained the win on the mound for the Bearcats.
Docter was charged with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing seven runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks.
Eyre pitched in relief for 5 1/3 innings. Eyre allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. He finished with four strikeouts.
"Ethan Eyre did an admirable job in relief, and Jesse Bradds caught a nice game," Veidt said.
WHS will play Thursday as they will host the Manchester Greyhounds in Southern Hills League play at 5 p.m.
