HILLSBORO — The McClain Lady Tigers traveled to Hillsboro and conquered the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats on Wednesday evening. The game was in Hillsboro for the 7th Annual Highland County Girls Basketball Shootout, as MHS won by a score of 51-15.

A majority of the scoring for MHS came from freshman Shania Massie and senior Jenna Perie as the two combined for 26 of the Lady Tigers' 51 points. Massie led all scorers with 14 points, and Perie followed with 12.

Massie earned a double-double as the freshman not only had 14 points, but 10 rebounds. She also added three steals to her overall totals.

"Shania did a good job of running the offense," McClain head coach Dennis Overstake said. "Both Sammy (Rooks) and Shania scored well for us … they did what we needed them to do on the court."

For WHS (0-7), Jessie Gilliland led with 10 points, six in the second half.

The game was all Lady Tigers from start to finish, including the first quarter, which was all with the "home team," as the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady 'Cats 10-0 in eight minutes.

Perie was first to score at the 6:35 mark with post points, followed eight seconds later by a layup from Massie. Perie scored again, making it a 6-0 score, and just six seconds later she took a charge on the defensive side.

"Jenna did a good job for us," Overstake said. "She did what she always does … she scores, rebounds and distributes the ball. She gets on the floor and makes us a better team."

MHS (5-3) wrapped up the first with a jumper from Kate Crabtree and inside points by Brittany Mullikin with 3:15 left on the clock.

The second eight-minute frame was more productive for the Lady 'Cats, scoring seven points, but they were still outscored by McClain 20-7 as the game headed into the half.

Whiteoak opened the second with a jumper by Marissa Bohl, but MHS answered with consecutive baskets by Mullikin and Katy Unger.

WHS came back with a jumper by Gilliland with 3:40 left in the frame.

After those points, the quarter was close to even with MHS outscoring WHS 6-4 in the final 3:21 of the quarter. In that span, Taylor Faulconer and Rooks combined for the McClain six points. For WHS, Emily Stratton and Brittany Luman added to the second-quarter totals.

What was a 13-point lead at the start of the third frame turned into a 31-point advantage after eight minutes ticked off the clock, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

The Lady Tigers opened the third with six consecutive points, all by Massie. WHS answered with two free throws, but McClain continued to score points with Rooks, Perie, Massie and Crabtree all adding to the lead following the free throws.

For WHS in the third, besides the two free throws from Luman, Gilliland scored two points on a jumper.

MHS won the final frame by a 9-4 difference, including a 3-pointer by Perie to top off the matchup. Tara Karnes added four points in the fourth for MHS, and Caitlyn Lovett scored two points.

"Like I told the kids after the game, we are on a roller coaster ride within our ball games. We did it at Washington C.H. where we didn't play well in the fourth quarter. Defensively (Wednesday), we did pretty well," Overstake said. "Offensively, we just struggled. It didn't matter if we were in the quarter-court or in transition … that's something we have to do better."

MHS outrebounded the Lady 'Cats 40-14. Though Massie led MHS in rebounding, Perie finished with eight boards (five offensive) and Karnes with six (five offensive). MHS tallied 26 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Tigers will have a few days off until their next game, as they don't play again until Thursday, Jan 5 when they host Unioto in a non-league game. Whiteoak will play again on Thursday, Dec. 22 when they host Manchester.

GAME NOTES: MHS had 12 turnovers … WHS had three steals … WHS committed 18 turnovers … MHS committed 13 turnovers … WHS had three steals … MHS had nine steals … Neither team had a blocked shot.
