The Hillsboro Lady Indians won their second consecutive game Monday evening by controlling the second half to defend their home court as the away team, defeating the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, 67-52.

The non-league game between the two Highland County teams was originally scheduled to be played at WHS, but due to water damage to their court, the game was switched to HHS with WHS being the home team.

Both teams played closely in the first half with the Lady 'Cats leading 18-17 after the first quarter concluded, but from there, the Lady Indians pretty much controlled the pace of the game.

"We gave up the 18 points in the first quarter, but after that, we played much better defensively," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "WHS had kids step up and shoot well from the perimeter.

"Their kids changed our game plan."

As for the first frame, Hillsboro Madison Snyder was first to put points on the board, but the score was soon tied with a basket by Emma Wardlow.

Wardlow led all scorers with a game-high 25 points. She was 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. Snyder finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Lady Indians.

From there, WHS took the lead with put-back points from Amber Gorman, but HHS tied it with a bucket from Hannah Kibler.

HHS took a 6-4 advantage with a layup by Kaylynn Bell, but again, Wardlow was there with two free throws at the 4:09 mark for a 6-6 tie. Bell ended the game with 11 points and eight assists.

Again, Kibler, who collected a total of 12 points (three rebounds), was there to put HHS back in front off a pass by Trista Rhodes which she was fouled. Kibler converted the ensuing free throw for a three-point play for a lead of 9-6.

"Hannah had an outstanding game," Moberly said.

Whiteoak's Morgan Campbell, who totaled 12 points, tied the game at 9-9 with a 3-pointer, and later, the Lady 'Cats tied the score once again, this time at 11 with 2:40 on the first-quarter clock with a basket from Jayde Parr.

Wardlow put WHS ahead 14-11 with a 3-pointer as she and Kirsten Juillerat exchanged multiple shots, ending with WHS holding onto a 16-15 lead with 50.3 left in the first.

Juillerat led HHS with a team-high 18 points and four rebounds.

Parr followed with a jumper, and the quarter ended with Rhodes scoring two points for the Lady Indians, cutting the WHS lead to one point at 18-17.

"Our kids were active and aggressive, but we need to do that without fouling," Moberly said. "We had too many fouls, especially late.

"Credit Coach Cooper's kids … they played hard, and they are always ready to play."

HHS took the lead for good at the conclusion of the second quarter, outscoring WHS, 15-7 for a 32-25 advantage.

Early in the second, Campbell sank a 3-pointer for a 21-21 score, but HHS was there with a 6-0 run, taking a six-point lead following two free throws from Bell. Campbell finished with four 3-pointers in the game.

Again, in the second, HHS had a run of points from Kibler and Snyder for five points to take a 32-23 advantage with 18.9 left in the quarter.

Entering the third, HHS led 32-25, and they continued to add to and keep their lead by outscoring their county rival, 16-11. In the fourth, HHS outscored WHS, 19-16.

The second half also had 31 fouls called in the 16-minute span.

"In the second half, they did a better job on the boards," WHS head coach Mike Cooper said. "JR always does a good job with his team. They took us out of what we wanted to do and stopped us getting into an offense.

"They outplayed us and wanted it more than we did."
