Lady Indians top Whiteoak

MOWRYSTOWN — For the second time in their past three games, the Hillsboro Lady Indians left the court after the final buzzer with a win.
Hillsboro and the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats struggled from the field in the first half, but it was Hillsboro who overcame their miscues with a solid second-half effort for a 49-27 non-league win on Saturday afternoon at Whiteoak High School.
The win sends HHS to a 3-8 overall record, while the Lady Wildcats are still looking for their first win of the season, standing at 0-12 overall.
"I was pleased with how we finished and executed in the second half," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We played better in the second half. We took care of the ball better, and we had good minutes from a lot of kids."
A big reason for the HHS win came from the post play of senior Danielle Gillman. Gillman finished with a game-high 16 points, including seven two-point baskets. Gillman scored 12 of her points in the first half.
"Danielle played especially well (Saturday)," Moberly said.
Kaylynn Bell followed Gillman by contributing nine points to the Hillsboro side of the scoreboard, including five free throws. As a team, the Lady Indians shot 41 total free throws, making 13.
It was the Lady Indians who scored double figures in three of the four quarters played, including a 12-8 first-quarter lead.
Speaking of the first frame, the senior duo of Whitney Earley and Gillman (senior Carey Juillerat missed the game due to injury) opened the game with the first four points off two jump shots.
Those points were answered by the Lady 'Cats with a 3-pointer from junior Clarissa Johnson (who finished with eight points) and following a turnover by HHS a basket by WHS senior Jessie Gilliland off an inbounds pass from Marissa Bohl, putting WHS ahead 5-4 with 5:18 left in the quarter. Gilliland wrapped up the game with six points.
After Taylor Moberly put HHS back in the lead, both teams then combined to visit the free-throw line for a combined 11 consecutive shots with HHS ending up with a one-point lead at 7-6 with 2:07 left in the opening quarter.
With HHS entering the second frame leading by four points, by the end of the second they had increased their lead to 12 points with points by Madison Colliver, Moberly, Gillman, Trista Rhodes, Earley, Kaylynn Bell and Alex Stratton.

The seven second-quarter points by WHS came from Gilliland, Emily Stratton, Johnson and Courtney Cummings as HHS took a halftime lead of 27-15.
After halftime, the lead by the Lady Indians jumped to 20 points once the third quarter ended as they outscored the host WHS squad 15-7, due in large part to Bell as she scored six points in the quarter, four coming from the free-throw line. Rhodes added five points in the HHS third quarter. Also scoring in the quarters were Gillman and Hannah Kibler.
The third was the second straight quarter WHS was held to seven points. Scoring those points were Bohl, Brittany Luman, Amber Gorman and Savannah Johnson.
In the final eight minutes, the final five WHS points came from Gilliland, Cummings and Mikayla Wescott. For HHS, their fourth-quarter points were from Moberly, Gillman and Earley.
The Lady 'Cats will play again on Monday, Jan. 9 as they travel to face the Fairfield Lady Lions, who have one win this season. Whiteoak's last victory was on Jan. 3, 2011 at Fairfield by a score of 57-39.
HHS will play again on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they host the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons.
In the JV game (one half), HHS defeated WHS 16-13. Leading HHS was Maranda Burns with five points, and leading WHS was Emily Stratton with five points.
