HILLSBORO — Being the away team on their home court in the final game of the 2011-12 SCOL-SHL Challenge made no difference to the Hillsboro Indians. Wearing their away red jerseys, the Indians led after each of the four quarters played for a 81-58 win against Highland County rival Whiteoak, Friday.

The Indians (6-2) led 19-14 after the first quarter and 40-35 at the half. In the third frame, the Indians broke away for a 62-45 lead. Eventually, the Tribe finished with a 23-point victory.

"We talked at halftime. I thought our defensive intensity wasn't where it needed to be in the first half," Hillsboro head coach Brett Prince said. "Anytime we give up 35 points, we're not excited. We play an up-tempo style, so we'll give up a few points.

"When we came out in the third, we changed some things up, and it really created some offense for us."

Hillsboro had five players who finished in double figures with Tyrand Cumberland leading the Tribe with 14 points, followed by Devanté Ames, Christian Cundiff and Jarrod Hart with 13 points each. Táron Captain finished with 11 points.

"Anytime we shoot over 50 percent I like our chances," Prince said. "What I like about our team is there are six guys who I feel can score 15 to 18 points. If one guy who isn't getting it done. Lately for us it has been someone else.

"Our guys are unselfish, and that's what I like about them."

The Indians also made eight 3-pointers against the Wildcats, as they upped their overall total this season to 51 3-point conversions in eight games as the Indians didn't score under 19 points in any of the four quarters played against WHS.

For the Wildcats, Gage Carraher led all scorers with 24 points, including two 3-pointers. Also in double figures was Luke Taggert with 13 points.

Though the Indians won the game, it was WHS who took control early on with a 9-2 run to start the first quarter with Carraher, Steven Meyers and Doc Seip all combining for the lead with 5:36 left in the first. Three of the nine points came from a 3-pointer by Carraher.

Captain brought up the WHS scoring with a three-point play, followed by two free throws by Chase Gilliland. Later in the quarter, Ames drained a 3-pointer, making it a one-point game at 11-10. That began a 12-2 run to end the quarter with Ames making a 3-pointer at the 3:00 mark for a HHS lead of 15-11. HHS ended the first with four free throws, and Carraher brought WHS closer with a three-point play to end the opening frame at 19-14.

HHS opened up the second quarter with a 6-2 run with points from Cumberland, Hart and Cundiff. Seip followed with two points, and WHS cut the HHS lead to six points with points from Blake Trublood, Carraher and Meyers with 4:57 left in the quarter.

For the remainder of the quarter, there were three more 3-pointers as Cumberland made it a 32-23 lead, but Luke Taggert cut the HHS lead to eight points with 2:23 on the clock. Carraher followed by cutting it to a five-point deficit with a 3-point basket at the 1:17 mark.

HHS ended the first half with three free throws to gain a five-point lead.

The third was a break-away quarter for the Indians as they outscored WHS 22-10 for a 17-point lead after three quarters. Scoring for HHS in the third were Cumberland, Ames, Hart, Trevor Gleadle, Gilliland, Captain and two 3-pointers from Cundiff.

For the Wildcats, Taggert scored six of the 10 WHS points in the third. In the fourth for WHS, Carraher scored eight of the 13 WHS points.

In the HHS fourth, Reese Leibreich nailed a 3-pointer for the Indians. Also for HHS, Ames, Hart, Gleadle, Captain, Tyia Cumberland and Cundiff all scored.

The win lifts HHS to 6-2 overall, and WHS falls to 2-4 overall, as they have dropped their last three games.

WHS will play again on Thursday, Dec. 29 when they face CNE at Lynchburg-Clay High School in the Wilkin Holiday Tournament. WHS will play at 6 p.m. The second game of the tournament will be LC vs. Paint Valley at 7:30 p.m. The winners and losers of those games will play each other on Friday, Dec. 30.

HHS will play again on Tuesday, Jan. 3 when they face the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles in an SCOL matchup.

"Madison-Plains is coming here, and they are playing very well," Prince said. "They are undefeated in the league, and they will be a huge test for us."
