DODSONVILLE — The Whiteoak Wildcats were unable to hold onto a fourth quarter lead Wednesday night against the Paint Valley Bearcats. PV outscored the Wildcats 20-10 in the final frame for a 56-50 victory over WHS, in the Wilkin Scholarship Tournament at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
WHS has now dropped four non-league games this season, but have won three Southern Hills League games for an overall record of 3-4 overall, 3-0 in the SHL.
The Wildcats began the fourth with a four point lead (40-36), and moved their lead to 46-42 with 4:48 left in regulation.
But with the score close, the Bearcats were the ones to jump ahead and take over the game, for good.
"They (PV) started in the zone, but we weren't working our way to the inside," WHS head coach Tom Wessner said. "We settled for jumpers, but we could have worked inside more."
Garett Tyree, a PV senior, scored two points in transition after gaining a steal, followed with a free throw from Caleb Stratton, bringing PV within one point of tying the game. Tyree finished with 12 points. Stratton had 13.
The Bearcats took the lead with free throws by Aaron Clayton with 1:58 left on the clock.
After the Wildcats were unable to convert from the free-throw line, Eli Barker sank two free throws for a 49-46 PV lead.
In the fourth quarter, PV was 16-of- 22 from the free-throw line (26-of-36 for the game).
WHS came within one point of tying the game off a layup by Mike Carraher with 1:03 left in the quarter. He finished with 10 points.
PV ended the game on an 8-2 run (all free-throws). WHS improved their free throw shooting at 11-of-15, but shot just five in the final frame, going 2-of-5.
Though the fourth quarter had a combined 30 points form both teams, the first quarter was opposite in terms of scoring, with WHS leading 7-5.
WHS scored the first five points, in a span of 3:45, with a layup from senior Joe Michael and 3-pointer by sophomore Gage Carraher. Carraher ended the game with 10 points.
The Bearcats scored their first point, a free throw, with 3:00 left in the first when Nathan Barker converted from the foul line. Doc Seip scored the final points of the first for WHS with 10 seconds remaining. Seip was tied for the game-high in scoring with 16 points.
The scoring picked up tremendously in the second quarter with the Bearcats outscoring Whiteoak, 24-20.
With PV leading 21-17 with under 4:00 remaining in the first half, Luke Taggert brought WHS within four points of tying the Bearcats. Each team exchanged basket-for-basket as the quarter continued with Whiteoak's Mark Crowe scoring two points, leaving 35 seconds on the first half clock. Gage Carraher ended the second quarter with two free throws as the Wildcats trailed, 29-27. He led WHS in scoring during the quarter, with six points, all from the free-throw line.
"With some non-league game coming up this was a good time to give Mark and Luke some time on the court. They work very hard and looked good (Wednesday)," Wessner said. "They did a nice job and handled themselves well."
WHS tied the game at the start of the third with Wes Stratton knocking down a jumper, followed with Michael and Seip scoring buckets for a 33-29 WHS advantage with 5:25 left in the third.
After two points by PV, Gage Carrager and Seip added three more points, putting the Wildcats ahead 36-31 around the 3:30 mark of the third.
Logan Marrko, who tied for the game-high in scoring with 16 points, sank 1-of-2 from the free-throw line after the Wildcats were given a technical foul. WHS answered with transition points by Seip, off a pass by Michael.
The loss means WHS will take on Glenwood New Boston on Thursday night at LCHS in the consolation game of the Wilkin Alumni Tournament. PV will face Lynchburg-Clay who defeated New Boston in the second game of the four-team tournament. Thursday's games will take place at 6 and 8 p.m. WHS will play in the 6 p.m. game.[[In-content Ad]]
