Mustangs take two games

DODSONVILLE - Using their overall team speed this season the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs stayed undefeated with victories in their past two games, defeating Highland County foe Fairfield 4-1 and Southern Hills League rival Ripley 3-0.

                                                         L-C junior Codey Tate gave the Mustangs the lead against FHS, which L-C never relinquished, as he beat the Lions' defense with a pass from sophomore Wesley Pierson for the 1-0 advantage at the 34:03 mark of the first half.

      Tate wasn't finished in the opening half against the Lions, netting his second goal four minutes later (30:19) with an assist from sophomore Tyler Davidson.

      Then it was time for senior Wes Yeomans to seal the win for the undefeated Mustangs.

      With 17:55 left in the first half the senior forward dribbled through the FHS defense for his first goal of the game, making the score 3-0.

      Yeomans added to the L-C lead with a goal in the second half (31:45) as he blasted by the Lions' defense for the goal and the 4-0 lead.

      The Lions didn't fold in the second half as Sam Stauffer scored the Lions' lone goal off a pass from Nate Hawkins with 9:11 left in the game.

      L-C coach Dennis West said Yeomans and Tate were the standout players on the offensive side for his team. On defense Colt West, Matt West and Aaron Skaggs were the top defensive players against Fairfield.

      "Scoring the first two goals quickly gave us confidence and momentum," Dennis West said. "It was a good effort from our players after being idle for two-and-a-half weeks. Our passing was excellent. We also had good play from our bench."
