GREENFIELD — Defense was the name of the game for the McClain Lady Tigers Saturday afternoon at McClain High School. The Lady Tigers handed the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles their first loss of the season, 43-16.

The Lady Tigers held MP scoreless in the South Central Ohio League matchup for nearly 14 minutes of game time. MP scored their sixth point with 2:25 left in the first quarter and didn't score again until the 4:14 mark of the third frame.

"I thought two big factors to this game were our defense, and the other was two of their primary scorers didn't score for them," MHS head coach Dennis Overstake said.

MHS (2-1, 4-1) held two of MP's top scorers to zero points. Before Saturday's game, one was averaging 14.5 points per game, as MP entered the game at 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the South Central Ohio League.

"Jenna was on her most of the time when she was out there, but when she wasn't, it was by committee," Overstake said. "The girls all did a nice job. They (MHS) didn't give (MP) the open looks, like they've have been getting against the teams they've been playing. I thought if it was full or quarter court defense, coach (Jarrod) Haines had (our girls) doing a very nice job."

But the first half wasn't full of offense by either team, with MHS leading 18-6. The Lady Tigers led the first quarter 8-6. In the second frame, MHS really used their pressure by keeping MP scoreless, while adding 10 points to their lead.

The first quarter began with Jenna Perie (who tallied a total of eight points) and Sammy Rooks putting the Lady Tigers up 6-2, with Perie scoring four. Later in the quarter, MP's Natalie Wolfe tied the game at six.

That would be the last of MP's scoring for the first half.

"We didn't give them any open looks for threes," Overstake said. "They've (MP) been scoring several thre's. We told the team they will come down in transition and launch out three' and hit them. That was big for us in limiting their scoring by not letting them shoot their three pointers."

Rooks finished off the opening quarter with a basket at the buzzer, and it was Kate Crabtree who added points to the MHS lead to start the second quarter with put back points.

Most of the quarter was slow offensively, with MHS taking nearly two minutes in-between scoring baskets.

After Rooks' bucket at the 6:26 mark, Chrissy Cobb scored in transition with a layup. With 2:18 left in the first half, Brittany Mullikin put MHS up 14-6 with inside points while being fouled.

Following the short spurts of scoring, the Lady Tigers scored on a more consistent basis near the end of the frame. Cobb added points with a put back basket and two free throws, ending the first half with MHS ahead by 12 points. Cobb led all scorers with 14 points, finishing 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

"We told them (MHS) they aren't putting themselves in position to get fouled if they aren't going to the basket. Chrissy did that and made all eight of hers," Overstake said.

MHS began the third with more scoring and even tougher defense, going on a 10-0 run to start the frame. Scoring in the run was Cobb, Rooks and Crabtree. Rooks and Crabtree each ended the game with eight points.

The run was stopped with a 3-pointer by MP's Casey Knisley with 4:14 left in the quarter. Knisley led MP in scoring with seven points.

McClain led 30-9 at the start of the fourth, but MP scored four of the first six points added to the scoreboard, putting a slight dent into the lead of MHS.

With 2:57 left in the final quarter, Megan Hogle sank a 3-pointer for the Lady Tigers, putting them up 41-13.

Shooting for both teams was low with MHS shooting 17-of-50 for 34 percent. MP was 6-of-36 for 17 percent.

MHS jumps to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the SCOL. MP falls to the same record at 4-1, 2-1.

The Lady Tigers will not play at home for the rest of the calendar year, traveling to London on Dec. 17 and Adena on Dec. 23.[[In-content Ad]]
