Lady Lions top Green Devils
LEESBURG – After fighting off a scoreless tie in the first half of play, it was the Fairfield Lady Lions who showed up in the second half, Monday evening at Fairfield High School, as they scored twice in the half for a 2-0 win over the North Adams Lady Green Devils in the Division II SE District Sectional Semifinals.
No. 3 seeded Fairfield will now face the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs for the sectional championship Thursday.
But on Monday, the Lady Lions had numerous opportunities in the first half to break the scoreless affair, but their shots sailed in every direction, except into the goal.
“North Adams played tough and packed the box on us in the first half, which caused us a lot of problems,” Fairfield coach Russ Boone said. “We made adjustments at the half, and were able to play our style of soccer.”
In the second half it was Kayla Haines who put the Lady Lions on the board, scoring the first goal of the game with the assist credited to Sadie Jones.
Then the combination switched roles as Haines assisted Jones for the second and final goal of the game.
Boone also recognized the play of Shelby Smith.
“Shelby (Smith) played one heck of a game at the midfield position,” Boone said. “She settled us down and that was the difference of the game.”
FHS keeper Gabby Boone finished with six saves.
North Adams had one win on the season, entering the postseason seeded No. 6.
The Lady Lions and Lady Mustangs will play for the sectional title at 5 p.m. at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
