Wildcats propel past Wellston at Coach Young Classic

Playing Saturday afternoon at the Coach Young Classic, the Whiteoak Wildcats used a 15-point fourth quarter to defeat the Wellston Rockets, 51-48 at North Adams High School.

Whiteoak (2-4, 5-8) held an 18-8 lead after the first quarter was finished, as Zander Roades made two 3-pointers, a two-point basket and a free throw for nine points in the opening frame.

Also in the first for WHS, Sawyer Blair made two 3-pointers for six points, and Brady Brandenburg scored three points with a basket and free throw.

The roles reversed in the second frame as Wellston outscored the Wildcats 18-8 in the second, leaving the halftime score tied at 26-26.

The Wildcats in the second had four points from Brandenburg, two points by Michael and two made free throws from Tedford.

Wellston (2-10) won the third frame at 13-10 with Whiteoak having two points from Zach Igo, five points by Blair, and Brandenburg scored three points in the third.

Whiteoak in the fourth quarter rallied with 15 points, while their defense held Wellston to nine points.

In that final frame, the Wildcats had seven points scored by Blair and eight points scored from Brandenburg.

Both Blair and Brandenburg each led Whiteoak with 18 points, as Blair totaled five two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and he went 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Brandenburg totaled seven two-point baskets, and he finished 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Roades ended the game with nine points, as he made one two-point basket, two 3-pointers, and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Scoring two points each were Igo, Tedford and Michael.

Team totals for the Wildcats included 15 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers, and they were 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Wellston finished the game with 14 two-point baskets, six 3-pointers and they were 2-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Wellston was led in scoring by Wes Briggs with 18 points. Also with double-figure scoring was Devin Barnhill with 10 points.

The win improves Whiteoak to a 5-8 overall record. Wellston is now 2-10 overall.
