Lady Mustangs secure 16th win of season

Not only did the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs secure their 16th win of the 2023-24 season Thursday night, they also guaranteed a second-place finish in Division I of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference. 

The win was a 54-46 victory over the visiting Peebles Lady Indians in Lynchburg-Clay’s next-to-last regular-season game of the season, and their final SHAC contest as well. 

Forty-eight of Lynchburg-Clay’s 54 points were scored by their 1,000-point trio, as seniors Macy Etienne, Jade Massey and Addison West all reached the scoring column. 

Etienne led LCHS with 24 points, as she sank six 3-pointers in the win, along with a two-point basket and she was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

Massey totaled 16 points for LCHS, finishing the game with five two-point baskets, and she was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Massey also had nine steals, seven rebounds and four assists, and for good measure she added a block.

West totaled eight points for the Lady Mustangs, making one 3-pointer and two two-point field goals, She also finished with eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. 

Madison McMullen scored the remaining six points for the home team, as the Lady Mustang totaled three two-point baskets. She also collected three rebounds, two assists and two steals. 

The fourth senior for LCHS, Ella Barry, battled her way to one rebound and one steal in the win. 

Other players of note for LCHS on Thursday were Joslyn Rockey with three rebounds and Allie Waits with two rebounds.

LCHS as a team totaled seven 3-pointers, 11 two-point baskets, 24 rebounds, 13 steals, eight assists and two blocks. Lynchburg-Clay also committed just eight turnovers. 

The Lady Mustangs led 16-11 after the first quarter. After being outscored 18-13 in the second quarter by Peebles, it was a tied score at halftime at 29 points each.

Each team scored nine points in the third for a score of 38-38, but LCHS broke away from the Lady Indians in the fourth quarter with a 16-8 fourth frame, leaving LCHS winning by eight points. 

Next for LCHS is a game on Saturday, Feb. 10 on the road against South Webster in non-conference action to wrap up the regular season. 

LCHS will play in the Division III Sectional Finals on Saturday, Feb. 17 vs. a TBD opponent at 8 p.m. in a game scheduled to be played at Chillicothe High School.
