Tate Davis’ 3-pointer sends Indians to FAC victory over Jackson
With around four seconds left in the fourth quarter, Hillsboro junior guard Tate Davis took the game in his hands and made the biggest shot of the season thus far for the Indians, as he sank a long-range 3-pointer — on the road — leading to HHS defeating the host Jackson Ironman, 61-58 for the Frontier Athletic Conference win.
Though the Indians lost a double-digit lead in the game and were outscored 25-17 in the fourth quarter, they did what was needed to gain the coveted FAC win. Another big aspect of the win was holding a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, and then outscoring the host Ironmen, 11-6 in the second frame for a halftime lead of 26-19.
The first quarter saw Hillsboro have a 3-pointer made by Nic Burns, while Steven Kibler sank two baskets. Jack Howland made a 3-pointer and a two-point basket in the first, and Davis sank a 3-pointer as well in the opening quarter.
Hillsboro’s second quarter saw Davis make two 3-pointers and go 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, while Brayden Hunter made a two-point basket and Burns made a free throw.
In the third quarter, the Indians scored 18 points, where Davis had six points, including a 3-pointer, and he was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Hunter made two free throws in the quarter, as he was 2-of-2 from the line, and Kibler sank a two-point basket. Also in the third for HHS, Howland sank a 3-pointer, and Stewart made two two-point baskets and a free throw for a five-point frame.
Then came the fourth frame where Stewart added another four points off two baskets and two made free throws on two attempts, plus Howland made three free throws on four chances. Davis led the frame with not only the game-winning basket, but he was 6-of-6 in the quarter from the free-throw line, plus a two-point basket and the aforementioned shot from beyond the arc.
In all, Davis led the Indians with 28 points as he made one two-point basket, five 3-pointers, and he was 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Howland totaled 10 points in the win, and Stewart followed with nine points. The rest of the final scoring for HHS included Kibler with six points, Hunter with four points and Burns with four points.
The win for the Indians moves them to 1-0 in the FAC and 2-0 overall.
