Hillsboro Lady Indians finish 1-1 in season-opening doubleheader

The 2024 softball season for the Hillsboro Lady Indians saw them play two very competitive games at the Queen of the Hill event held at Rock Hill High School, where HHS defeated Portsmouth West and fell in a one-run game to the South Webster Lady Jeeps on Saturday. 

Hillsboro — on March 23 — played their first game of the ’24 season against Portsmouth West where HHS won by a 4-2 score, with Hillsboro scoring their runs in the top of the second (two runs), fifth and seventh innings. 

Portsmouth West scored their two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. 

HHS finished the win with four runs, eight hits and no errors, while PWHS totaled two runs, five hits and committed two errors. 

Chloe Roberts was 2-for-4, including a home run, with two runs and one RBI. 

Mylea Fridley went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and a steal. Isabelle Brunck was also 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, and one of her two hits was a double. 

Addy Huff finished 1-for-3 with one walk, while teammate Morgan Garman finished 1-for-2 with a walk. 

Halle Reveal walked once and had a steal, and Reagan Clemons collected a steal.

Camryn Spruell was the winning pitcher, ending the first game with a complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one hit by pitch. She totaled 14 strikeouts on 120 pitches (81 strikes).

HHS lost their second game, as they faced South Webster in a close, extra-inning battle by a 1-0 score in nine innings. 

The pitcher’s duel saw SWHS score the lone run of the game in the top of the ninth inning. 

For HHS, they had 31 at-bats on game two of their doubleheader, and in the second game they totaled eight hits against South Webster. Reveal finished 2-for-4, and Brunck was also 2-for-4. Meredith Dietrick finished 2-for-3 with a steal, while Roberts was 1-for-4 and Fridley was 1-for-3. 

Spruell in the tough-luck loss pitched all nine innings for Hillsboro (128 pitches, 95 strikes), where she allowed one run (unearned) on three hits and she totaled 23 strikeouts.

HHS now stands at 1-1 overall and is scheduled to play again on Tuesday, March 26 on the road at Williamsburg with a 5 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
