McClain boys soccer defeats Zane Trace

GREENFIELD — The McClain Tigers improved their overall record to 2-1 on the season after defeating Zane Trace 6-0 Thursday night (Aug. 21) in the boys soccer match at McClain Field.
McClain senior Creed Davis had an outstanding game for the Tigers registering the hat trick (three goals) while contributing two assists.
McClain led 3-0 after the first half was in the books with three different players having made goals. Sophomore Brayden Stover scored the first goal of the night at the 16:36 mark followed by goals from Davis (7:13) and freshman Janson Allison 3:55 making it 3-0 at the intermission.
Davis opened the second half scoring with a pair of goals in the first ten minutes of play giving him the infamous hat trick, then junior Case Robbins finished off the scoring in the contest with a nice goal with 6:07 remaining in the match.
Second year head coach John Gill was very pleased with his team’s performance and is very excited about their 2-1 start to the season.
“I think this is the first time that we’ve had a winning record to begin the season with me as a coach here at McClain,” Gill said. “We’ve been working really hard to get new kids into the program and so far its working out for us.
“We have multiple freshmen and sophomores starting this year and that’s just incredible, we also have a lot of kids returning with lots of varsity experience but the majority of our team is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.”
Several kids contributed a lot of minutes on the night and everyone on the team got into the match.
“Our bench players contributed a ton today, most of them played almost the entire second half, so I’m very happy with what I saw today,” Gill said. “To be successful this year we have to cut down on the number of goals we give up, last year we conceded a lot of goals and for this team to be successful we cannot do that.”
McClain controlled the ball most of the game and their defense was spotless which has led to the early season success that the Tigers are experiencing.
The Tigers (2-1) travel to Peebles on Saturday, Aug. 23 before returning home Tuesday, Aug. 26 to host Chillicothe, and Thursday, Aug. 28 when they entertain Westfall with both contests starting at 5 p.m.
