Fairfield Lions falls at home court against Botkins

In a new game added to their schedule due to a cancellation this season, the Fairfield Lions played a non-conference game Saturday night at Grandle Gymnasium, falling at their home court against the Botkins Trojans, 46-39. 

Fairfield had their share of struggles in the opening frame, being held to three points in the first quarter for a 10-3 deficit with their points coming from a two-point basket by Caleb Rice and a free throw made by Quentin McIntosh. 

Fairfield improved in the second quarter with a 12-8 frame in their favor, but it was Botkins (15-3) leading at the half by an 18-15 score. 

The Lions’ second frame consisted of five points from Brody Smith as he made a 3-pointer and two-point basket, a 3-pointer from Zach Ahsaruk, and four points from McIntosh as he made two baskets. 

Fairfield took the lead after three frames at 32-30 lead after winning the frame at 17-12. In the fourth and final frame, the away team outscored Fairfield 16-7, sending Fairfield to a seven-point loss. 

The third-quarter scoring by the Lions included nine points by Smith with two 3-pointers, a two-point basket and he made two free throws on two attempts. Fairfield’s third frame also included a 3-pointer by Rice and four points off another two baskets by McIntosh. 

In the fourth frame, the Lions’ seven points were scored by Griffin Friend with a 3-pointer and two-point basket, and two points off a basket by McIntosh. 

Smith led Fairfield with 15 points on Saturday by making two two-point field goals, three 3-pointers, and he was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

McIntosh totaled 11 points for the Lions with five two-pointers and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Rice finished with five points (one 3-pointer, one two-pointer), and Friend also had five points in the game (one 3-pointer, one two-pointer). Ahsaruk totaled three points (3-pointer). 

Totals for Fairfield were nine two-point baskets, six 3-pointers, and they finished 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

For Botkins, their leading scorer was Eli Pitts with 15 points, and Will Monnin had 13 points. 

Totals for BHS were 17 two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and they were 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. 

Fairfield is now 10-5 overall (7-3 SHAC). 

Next for the Lions is a home game on Tuesday, Feb. 10 against the Unioto Shermans in non-conference action.
