5th inning leads to Lions loss to Eastern

The Fairfield Lions were unable to gain a valuable road win on Tuesday night, as a four-run fifth inning by the home team Eastern Warriors led to a 5-3 loss for Fairfield in Southern Hills Athletic Conference competition.

Fairfield held an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, and after four innings they held a 2-1 lead against the host Warriors. Then came the bottom of the fifth, where Eastern tacked on four runs for a 5-2 lead. Fairfield tried to battle back as they scored a run in the sixth inning, but that completed the scoring for both SHAC teams, with the Warriors winning by two runs.

Fairfield had seven hits in the loss, but also committed four errors. Eastern totaled six hits and had one error.

Cade Miller finished 2-for-2 for the Lions, collecting a double, two runs, a hit by pitch and two steals. Dow Moon finished 1-for-4, and Zane Matthews was 1-for-3 with a triple and one run scored.

Corbin Willey was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Landry Hattan went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wyatt Willey finished 1-for-3.

Gabe Fouch was charged with the loss, as he pitched six innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk. He threw 106 pitches, 76 for strikes, and he faced 28 batters.

The loss sends the Lions to second place in SHAC Division I with a 6-1 conference record. They now stand 9-4 overall. Eastern is first in the SHAC with a 7-1 conference mark.
