Three chances to enjoy Plein Air art at Southern State

This fall, you’ll have three opportunities to acquaint yourself with a style of painting known as Plein Air. Southern State Community College’s South Campus near Sardinia is offering a Plein Air exhibition, workshop series and meet-the-artists open house. “Plein Air” – Art aficionados may be familiar with the French phrase; for the rest of us, however, it simply means “in the open air.” Embraced by the Impressionists, it’s an old style being revisited by new artists. Rather than work in a studio under artificial light, plein air artists place themselves in outdoor settings and paint in real time with the shifting natural light.
THE EVENTS
• Exhibition: Selected works by four Plein Air artists (Mark Gingerich, Ray Hassard, Joanne Edwards and Chuck Marshall) will be on display through Nov. 30 in SSCC’s Appalachian Gateway Center. Hours are Mon-Tues from 12 noon to 9 p.m., and Weds-Fri from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Free admission.
• Workshops: Study the style with one of the Plein Air artists –Gingerich (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1); Hassard (Oct. 14-15); Edwards (Oct. 21-22); and Marshall (Oct. 28-29). Fee (for students) of $100 per workshop or $300 for all four; fee (for non-students) of $180 per workshop or $450 for all four.
• Open House: Meet the Plein Air artists at an open house event 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Refreshments will be served and guests are encouraged to mingle, ask questions and share comments. Admission is free.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Mark Gingerich studied at the Atelier du Nord School of Classical Realism as well as the Scottsdale and Fredericksburg Art Schools. He is a founding member of the Ohio Plein Air Society and one of six artists featured in the book, “The Land We Call Ohio,” which was commissioned to celebrate Ohio’s bicentennial in 2003. His work is in numerous collections including that of former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Ohio Governor’s Mansion. Visit www.markgingerich.com to view his work. Ray Hassard attended classes at the Museum of Modern Art and studied at Pratt Institute. Ray’s work has been included in many national shows and competitions. He teaches at Baker Hunt Art & Cultural Center and leads workshops around the country. He was awarded signature and Master Pastelist status by the Midwest American Pastel Society. His art is represented by the Eisele Gallery in Cincinnati, Brandt-Roberts Gallery in Columbus, and the Oxford Gallery in Rochester, N.Y. Visit www.rayhassard.com to view his work.
Chuck Marshall studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the California Art Institute. While out west he studies with various artists who worked in the Southwest and California plein art styles. He worked as an illustrator and graphic designer, earning numerous awards. He also has performed as a judge in juried art competitions. Chuck’s work hangs in many private and corporate collections, and he has been asked to demonstrate his craft for art groups, teaching both illustration and fine art. Joanne Edwards began her formative art training at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. For several years, her paintings traveled with the Cinergy Collection and were displayed in Sen. Mike DeWine’s offices. Joanne is a member of the Cincinnati Art Club, the Queen City Art Club, the Indiana Plein Art Society and the Ohio Plein Air Society. After moving to Lake Waynoka in Sardinia, Joanne hosted the 2010 and 2011 annual Plein Air Paint-Out & Auction to benefit art scholarships at Southern State Community College.
