Schedule for Greenfield Historical Society's History Day 2011

Anthony Gibbs, a professional history re-enactor, will be telling the story of John Parker, a slave who bought his freedom in Alabama and eventually settled in Ripley, Ohio. There he started a successful iron foundry and raised his family. He became involved with John Rankin and his work on the Underground Railroad helping escaped slaves on their trek toward freedom. Mr. Gibbs will be presenting at Travellers Rest at 1 and 2 p.m. At other times, he will be roaming the grounds answering questions that visitors might have.
John Fitzgerald, minister and author, will be telling the story of Levi Coffin, a Quaker who moved from his home in North Carolina to Indiana because of the persecution of Quakers in the South. There he became a farmer and successful businessman while helping escaping slaves. Later he moved to Cincinnati to continue his work. Mr. Fitzgerald will be presenting at 10 and 11 a.m. at Travellers Rest.
The story of Druscilla Blackburn will be told by Earlene Scott at 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. at Travellers Rest. Mrs. Blackburn's son, William, was killed by a stray bullet from a saloon in 1864. This led to her being a part of the group of irate women who in 1865 marched on the saloons destroying all the liquor they could lay their hands on. Later her husband was charged and tried for killing a young woman in the Cliff Run area of Ross County.
New this year is Paul Orr, singingnspirituals. He will be sharing his singing talent at the Smith Tannery at 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Along with singing, he will be telling information about the songs. Anyone who knows Paul knows that his program will be quite entertaining.
Robert Lanning, a Buckskin fourth grader, will be sharing his knowledge on the life of a Civil War soldier in the Barnyard at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Robert has been a Civil War enthusiast for many years. Come hear Robert and learn about the life of a typical soldier in the Civil War.
Again this year, Susan Long will be playing the society's pump organ. Susan is the organist for the Greenfield Methodist Church and visitors to past History Days have enjoyed her rendition of old favorites. She will be in Smith Tannery for two concerts at 11:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Come hear her play. She has been known to play songs that the audience sings along with.
In addition to these presentations, History Day includes crafters, displays and food. Come spend an enjoyable day in Greenfield with the Greenfield Historical Society.
