RiverHills Bank has given the Highland County Homeless Shelter an opportunity by matching donations up to $1,000. This event will run from Nov. 1-30.

Although located in Milford, RiverHills Bank has supported our local organization since 2019.

The HCHS will also be collecting nonperishable food items for National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week starting Nov. 17, which will run through Nov. 23.

As a nonprofit that will have assisted nearly 200 homeless individuals in 2024, we live by the meaning of "stretching a dollar.” The HCHS, too, has felt the strains of higher costs and have seen a recent decline in our monetary and nonmonetary donations.

That is why we kindly ask that you consider donating, even if it's $5. The price of a coffee can help provide essentials for the shelter.

Contrary to what one may think, the HCHS does not receive state and/or federal funding for those needed items. Instead, we receive a grant (never guaranteed) from the Ohio Development Services Agency, which requires matching funds.

We never take your donations for granted, always seeking fundraising opportunities and saving on outgoing costs in order to keep from making program cuts. One way is operating with only two employees. Greg Hawkins, Executive Director since 2011, and I (Tammy Dennis, Administrative Director since 2017) are proud to be a part of the community in which we live and serve.

Years ago, Greg and I made a commitment to always keep the Highland County Homeless Shelter as an asset to Highland County, to always advocate and prioritize those who are vulnerable and less fortunate. The hard truth is our mission depends on you, your kindness and your generosity.

As a final note, we want to express our sincere gratitude to RiverHills Bank, and to you, the community, for all of the years and future support of our mission.

Publisher's note: A free press is critical to having well-informed voters and citizens. While some news organizations opt for paid websites or costly paywalls, The Highland County Press has maintained a free newspaper and website for the last 25 years for our community. If you would like to contribute to this service, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations may be made to: The Highland County Press, P.O. Box 849, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133. Please include "for website" on the memo line.
