Pesticide program set for March 15
The weather thus far in the month of March has given us a change from the snow and cold of February. Warmer temperatures have resulted in a departure of most of the snow and replaced it with an abundance of muddy conditions around the farm. How quickly the current conditions change remains to be seen. Just remember that we are inching closer to spring. Not fast enough, mind you, but we are getting there.
Pesticide Education Programs
The last local Pesticide Recertification School will be held on Monday, March 15 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the South Campus of Southern State Community College, near Fincastle. If you have not done so, please contact us at 393-1918 for a registration form as a $35 pre-registration is required or you will face a $45 registration fee at the door.
For individuals wanting to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator’s License or add categories to an existing license, there will also be certification testing at the same location. Testing on March 15 will run from 4-6 p.m. at the college. Please call the Ohio Department of Agriculture Pesticide Regulations at 1-800-282-1955, Ext. 31 for reservations.

Retail Ready
Training Programs
Retail Ready is a program designed to facilitate best commercial business practices between growers and various retail markets. Growth in demand for local foods, together with the growth in direct marketing by smaller-scale producers amplifies the need for grower training on what buyers are needing to more readily fit into their buying conventions.
Most buyers are anxious to work with local growers to market their local products, but have also expressed frustration at the lack of grower awareness of their preferred buying practices. This training should help growers and retailers build more successful market relationships. Retail Ready training was developed with generous assistance from the National MarketMaker program and the University of Arkansas Applied Sustainability Center.
The OSU Extension Direct Marketing Team is bringing Retail Ready to Ohio, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, local partners. ODA is providing the funding and coordination for this initial program roll-out and the program is evolving through the national MarketMaker network, the Ohio Food Policy Council, Market Connections Task Force and others.
A number of Extension personnel have been involved in the development of the program and the plans for this initial roll-out. This program will allow producers to evaluate their readiness by reviewing resources and a checklist of various topics related to how to package, label, price, invoice, deliver, meet quality and insurance standards, and much more.
Learn how to sell to retailers, restaurants and institutions by participating in one of the Retail Ready trainings held throughout Ohio in the coming weeks. The dates and locations for these trainings are as follows: March 9, Columbus; March 17, Peninsula; March 23, Xenia; April 5, Athens; and April 13, Bowling Green.
Give us a call at the Extension office for a flyer with a complete listing of exact locations and times.
The cost to participate in this program is $25 per person. Reservations need to be sent to Heather Kocher, Ohio Dept. of Agriculture, 8995 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068. Make checks payable to: Ohio Proud. Questions may be directed to (614) 752-2332.
