The mother-daughter team Candee and Katie Basford will be the featured guests for a Meet-the-Artists event 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) on Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
Candee’s artistic talents were brought to light by a rather lengthy and difficult experience—navigating the school and social service system as a mother of a child with Down syndrome. She took up painting in 2002, using watercolor and fabric art as a visual expression of emotions, dreams, realizations and an awakening of purpose. In 2003, Candee published a book, “We Dance Together,” which tells the story of her journey with daughter Katie. She also teaches communication, art history, and introduction to the arts at Southern State.
A watercolor artist in her own right, Katie’s artistic talents also surfaced from life experiences. The triggering event—falling in love—is beautifully expressed in her passionate heart paintings. “Paintings by Heart,” as Katie describes her work, surfaced under the guidance of James “Skip” Werline, art instructor at Southern State, where Katie has been a student for a few years.
The Basfords aren’t your typical country artists. What they create isn’t based on their surroundings or on the things they see outside of themselves. Instead, they both paint and create from what they feel, from the life events they experience. Their paintings will be on exhibition in the LRC through mid-March.
