The Hillsboro and Peebles Chapters of Modern Woodmen of America honored James Lyle as a Hometown Hero for 2024 in a dinner and ceremony held on Monday, Dec. 2 at the Alley Grille in Hillsboro.

Financial Representative Dan Mayo said, “Modern Woodmen is pleased to be able to honor Jim for his 50 years of dedication as a firefighter. We are so proud of Jim and all he has done for our community and are privileged to honor him as a hero and have his family with us for the ceremony. Modern Woodmen will be donating $100 to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation in Jim’s honor.

“Jim graduated from McClain High School in 1969 in the same class with my wife, Bev Mayo, Hillsboro and Peebles Chapters Coordinator. Jim joined the Air Force Reserves in May 1970, the Air National Guard in January 1979 and then retired in 2000.

“In 1974 Jim began a full-time career as a firefighter with the Hillsboro Fire Department and has continued as a firefighter for 50 years,” Mayo continued. “He continues to serve the Paint Creek Fire Department on some assignments.

“Jim also worked at the Highland County Sheriff’s Office since July 1985 and was the Highland County EMA Director for 27 years from 1990-2017. Jim has been married to Cheryl for 31 years, and together, they have four children, Joshua, Jaime, Tracey and Derek. They are members of Fall Creek Friends Church. Jim has been a Modern Woodmen member nearly all his life.”
