"This is a flashback to the 1960s coming to The Barn, with Mark Markham and the Jesters being recognized as one of the finest garage bands of that era," said Dr. Bill Fling, owner of the popular southern Highland County entertainment complex.
Markham joined the Jesters in 1959. During the 1960s, the group found great success throughout Florida, including a two-sided hit single, "I Don't Need You" and "Marlboro Country," both penned by Markham.
"I Don't Need You" was a Top 30 hit on WFUN in Miami and hit No. 1 on WQAM. Impressive sales and radio airplay prompted RCA Records to sign the group to a contract. And 1967 also found Markham featured on his own TV show in Palm Beach, Fla.
Later, Markham moved to New York City, playing the folk circuit with The Mark Markham Unit, performing at top venues such as CAFE WHA?, Gerdes Folk City and the Fillmore East. In the 1970s, Markham moved to Athens, Ohio, where he performed throughout the state with The Bogus Brothers. In the 1980s, he released an album, "If this is Love, I want my Money back."
Today, Markham resides in Meigs County in southeast Ohio.
Mark Markham and The Jesters reunite from time to time and all members remain active in the music business today. Guitarist Markham and band mates Billy Fariello and Dean Young on drums and Phil Thomas on guitar will be joined onstage at The Fling Barn by Markham's cousin, Charlie Pickett.
