On Tuesday, March 30, Adena Health System along with healthcare organizations across the nation will observe National Doctor’s Day, a time set aside each year to thank physicians for the many contributions they bring to our local communities.
The first Doctor’s Day was observed on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Ga., when Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. The first observance included the mailing of greeting cards and the placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors.
The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctor’s Day.
On March 30, 1958, a resolution commemorating Doctor’s Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives, and in 1990 legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctor’s Day.
Following overwhelming approval by the House and Senate, President George Bush on Oct. 30, 1990 signed a resolution designating March 30th as “National Doctor’s Day.”
“It’s only appropriate that a day be set aside to recognize physicians across the nation for the differences they make in the lives of patients and communities,” said Mark Shuter, Adena’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We especially thank physicians here at Adena for their dedication,” he added.
