History Day at the Hillsboro Library to include reenactors, Abraham Lincoln impersonator

By
Sarah Davidson, Hillsboro Library

The Hillsboro Library is excited to announce its first-ever History Day on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The library is partnering with the Highland County Historical Society and with the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society for this event, both of which will have booths available where patrons can ask questions and learn more about the organizations.

The day will be filled with various activities and presentations. For the past five years or so, we’ve held a comic con that is really popular, so we thought: Why not have a similar event for history buffs?

We’re excited to also offer a variety of prizes for this event. Winners of local trivia and of the history quiz will both receive prizes, but there will also be some special items raffled.

Raffle tickets will be earned by completing different History Day activities, such as a craft and a poll. Patrons will be able to earn a total of five tickets to put toward four different prize drawings: a history mug, a LEGO set, a history card game and Dayton Dragons tickets.

We are very thankful to the Dayton Dragons for their donation. Winners of that prize will receive four June tickets and four hats. This will be a wonderful experience for whoever the lucky winner is.

History Day will also include four scheduled programs:

• Local Trivia at 10 a.m.

• Women of Highland County, presented by Debbie Williams, at 11 a.m.

• The 54th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at noon

• Abraham Lincoln impersonator at 1 p.m.

We’re excited to have such wonderful people presenting on History Day. Debbie Williams is so knowledgeable and so much fun to listen to. She really makes local history come to life.

The 54th Ohio Volunteer Infantry is planning on bringing a cannonball to show patrons. The Abraham Lincoln impersonator, John Cooper, is an absolute delight. We had him here last year, and it was as if Abraham Lincoln really was here in the Hillsboro Library. The kids absolutely loved him.
