Hillsboro Garden Club holds first meeting, program of 2025

By Lynn Luman
Secretary
Hillsboro Garden Club

President Jennifer West brought the March 2025 Hillsboro Garden Club meeting to order with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Lynn Luman took roll call with 10 members and four guests answering the question, “Do you have a hot frame, greenhouse or window box with seeds started?”

The March tip of the month is as follows: The definition of a knee is a device used to find rocks in your garden. So true, as every gardener can attest.

Ruth Anna Duff provided the monthly treasurer’s report.

For the horticulture presentation, Andrea Schneider displayed several beautiful varieties of Daffodils from her garden.

Members then signed a card for Carla Spruill, who will soon be moving to be closer to her daughter and her family. We wish you well, Carla.

For new business, West provided an update on the Fall Region 16 meeting, which the Hillsboro Garden Club will be hosting on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Backroom Paradise. West informed the group that we will have four guest speakers for the meeting, and Luman will be in charge of hiring a caterer for a hot lunch during the meeting. In addition, all members of the Garden Club will provide a potluck breakfast for all attendees and guests. The vendor sales tables and centerpieces are yet to be decided.

Members also discussed spending a few hours on an upcoming Saturday to clean the back room for items to place on the Hillsboro Garden Club sales table. The discussion was tabled for the next meeting.

Luman provided an update on the March 2025 seed exchange with the Highland County District Library in Hillsboro. Like last year, the seed exchange was a huge success, and the Hillsboro Garden Club would like to offer a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the staff of the library, with a special shout-out to Sarah Davidson. The garden club is already looking forward to next year!

For the educational program of the meeting, Helen Roe presented a myriad of seed starting ideas, with the help of Sue Hurley’s two excited grandchildren, who planted some seeds for their garden.

To wrap the meeting, Judith Stivender presented the theme of the 2025 Highland County Fair floral shows on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be “The Show Must Go On!” Information that is more detailed will be available in the Highland County Fair Book released every summer by the Highland County Fair Board. The Hillsboro Garden Club encourages all gardeners to exhibit their flowers and plants in the fair this year.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, followed by a second.

The night’s refreshments were provided by Stivender and West.

The next meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club will be Tues., Apr. 22 in the floral hall at the Highland County Fairgrounds. The next meeting is the SPRING PLANT SALE and the public is invited to attend. Come join the lively bidding with Larry Moore as auctioneer, and assistance provided by Luman and Stivender. Hostesses will be Shelly Rayburn and Nancy Baldwin.
