The Highland County Historical Society has announced many upcoming events for the holiday season to be held at the Highland House Museum, located at 151 East Main Street in Hillsboro. Museum director Margaret Van Frank is currently busy preparing the museum for its annual open house.
According to Van Frank, various local organizations will be coming in all week to help decorate the museum for the holidays. The open house will be held Friday, Nov. 13 from 1-5 p.m.
Van Frank is also readying the museum for the Highland County Historical Society Museum Shoppe, which will be held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from Nov. 13 through Dec. 20. Local artists will be selling a variety of beautiful hand-crafted items, which will make great holiday gifts. Featured items include: hand-woven scarves, place mats, shawls, wool sweaters, baby sweaters, headbands, wool and alpaca hats, mittens, and needle-felted pincushions; felted purses; hand-thrown pottery; kids’ quilts and cushions; cross-stitched samplers; Theme Kakes; handmade paper-woven notecards; needle-felted animals; prairie dolls; typewriter jewelry; hand-hooked rugs and table mats; primitive hand-painted signs; framed Hillsboro High School pictures; and oil paintings.
“This year, our Museum Shoppe is featuring locally crafted gifts,” says the brochure for the gift shop. “Not only are you assured of a quality gift for your friends and family, but you are supporting an Ohio craftsman while supporting your museum.”
Van Frank says that she is sure that “there are items to appeal to everybody” in the store. The gift shop’s hours are Fridays from 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.
• A children’s tea party will also be held this holiday season.
Scheduled for Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., the event requires a reservation,
which can be made by calling Van Frank. Local Boy Scouts will serve guests, said Van Frank. The museum is available for organizations to host parties or meetings during the holiday season, and anyone interested is encouraged to call as soon as possible to reserve a room
in the museum for their holiday events.
The museum completed a new handicapped-accessible entrance for their back doorway on Oct. 30, just in time for the holidays, and the museum is also open for tours.
