Hickory Bend suggests delaying visits

Each year about this time, in order to avoid having disappointed visitors, we try to remind people that many hearty water lilies don't start blooming in our area until June or after and that water lily flowers don't open each day until after 10 a.m. and flowers of some varieties start closing about 3 p.m. That makes prime visiting hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
That fact is so little known that a garden club scheduled Hickory Bend as the last stop on a tour of area gardens which resulted in people showing up an hour or more after most water lily flowers closed for the day. Mother nature directs the show at Hickory Bend and she doesn't abide by any schedule but her own.
Flowers of tropical day blooming water lilies tend to open earlier and to stay open later, some until after 6 p.m., and flowers of tropical night bloomers stay open until about noon but they won't be on display until July and won't reach peak bloom until the month of August when we are officially not open. Closing during the month when both tropical and hearty water lilies are in full bloom doesn't seem logical but we know from experience that interest in visiting falls off sharply after July. We will be open for business in May this year, primarily to offer a large selection of Iris plus Day Lilies, Caladiums, Hostas, marginal and other plants, but suggest that visitors whose primary interest is in seeing and photographing water lily flowers might want to delay visiting until late June or July this year because torrential rains throughout the month of May have put us far behind in dividing water lilies, getting water gardens ready to view and weeding. People seeking advise, wishing to purchase plants or who like to pull weeds are invited to come earlier.
Since our tropical water lilies, many with flowers in shades of blue, lavender and purple, should be in full bloom at the time we are planning to open our water gardens to the public on Labor Day and the Friday through Sunday before. If only one visit is to be made this year this is the time to come. In addition to having most of over 80 varieties of hardy water lilies still in bloom and over 80 varieties of tropical water lilies that should be in full bloom, we will be conducting a running seminar on wintering tropical water lilies inside over winter and offering excess tropical water lilies at special bargain prices. There is little more satisfying than sipping a cup of hot chocolate while viewing a snow covered winter landscape through a window behind an inside tub garden water garden with tropical water lilies in bloom.
Regular business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday, May through July.
Hickory Bend Water Gardens and More is located at 3324 Panhandle Road, Lynchburg, Ohio 45142. Turn right on Panhandle Rd (the only option) off State Rt, 134 just north of Lynchburg and go 1.5 miles, Watch for the sign on the right just around the first bend.
