HHCA offers drug awareness class

Highland Holiday Community Association (HHCA) is a homeowners community at Rocky Fork Lake committed to having a better community. The group members, as neighbors and homeowners, watch out for each other. The association is driven by the desire to help one another and the surrounding areas as well.
HHCA, Enchanted Hills and Holiday Trails, all Rocky Fork area communities, wanted to provide information on drug awareness to help homeowners and their families become more aware of the drug problem in Paint Township. They invited the Highland County Sheriff's Department to give a class on drug awareness/trafficking.
On March 21, Detective Richard Warner and Detective Denny Kirk gave a presentation on drug awareness at the HHCA community building. Members from all three communities attended. Paint Township is ranked second, with Liberty Township being first in total arrests for 2010 in Highland County. Arrests in 2010 were 299 with 68 felonies. In 2009, arrest were 337, with 104 being felonies. In 2009, Paint Township was ranked first in arrests.
The detectives discussed meth labs and what to look for involving meth, such as how it is sold and manufactured. From October 2009 to October 2010, 35 meth labs were seized in Highland County, with a total of 359 labs for the entire state during this time frame. Not only does meth affect the person using it, but it has hazards on the environment as well as a dangerous aftermath of manufacturing. Homeowners need to be aware of the effects on housing after a lab has been seized, including whether a home where drugs have been manufactured can be safely occupied without health hazards.
Also discussed were heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and pills. The detectives showed photos of each drug and discussed how they affected the person using them and how people are buying them and getting the ingredients needed, as well as what to look for in your area as far as individuals who sell them.
Members attending asked questions about community involvement. Kirk stated that if you have called the sheriff's department but feel they have not gotten a resolution on a call, it doesn't mean that they aren't checking into your call. Many tips can not be rushed into without investigation. He asked us the community to call the anonymous tip line at (937) 840-6243 and leave a tip on any drug activity you suspect may be happening in your neighborhood. You do not have to leave your name unless you want to. As parents, grandparents, community members and neighbors, the groups stress the need to be actively involved in this process. They do not want Paint Township to be known for drug activity or to be in second place on the list again. Paint Township has so much to offer, including natural resources like Rocky Fork State Park that can help the community get back to the basics of camping, boating and outdoor activities.
