Highland County Help Me Grow RIF Program has been awarded the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) grant for its third consecutive year. They were again awarded federal funding estimated at 75 percent of the cost of books.
This means the program only has a 25 percent match for the second consecutive year. The first year we were funded 100 percent by local donations from the Cassner Foundation.
The addition of the federal funding has allowed the program to stretch the dollars the Cassner Foundation donated to a third year.
Last year, the agency partnered with School Age Program at Hills and Dales to provide books to their children who attend school there.
This year the program will partner with Head Start to provide books to their population.
This is a much-needed resource in this community, as approximately 95 percent of the children enrolled in these programs fall into the poverty range.
This service allows these children to get brand-new age-appropriate books throughout the year.
RIF is a national program that addresses early literacy by promoting reading at a very early age.
Highland County Help Me Grow’s RIF program serves the birth to three population. By partnering with Head Start, they can serve more children, more than doubling last years numbers.
The last book distribution for Help Me Grow’s program was held at their annual Easter Bunny playgroup, where attendance was large.
Head Start will begin their distributions at the beginning of the school year in the fall.[[In-content Ad]]
