Greenfield Historical Society’s Holiday Tour of Homes Dec. 5

   The Greenfield Historical Society’s Holiday Tour of Homes will be held this year on Sunday, Dec.5 from noon-5p.m.

   Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Home Building and Loan beginning Nov. 22 in Greenfield, or on the day of the tour at the Grain and Hay Building, Jefferson St. and McAthur Way,Greenfield, and at each home.

   Five distinct homes in Greenfield and the surrounding area will be open for ticket holders to tour and admire. In Greenfield on one end of South Street the Bob and Becky Grove home will be open for touring. The home’s porch is just the beginning of the care the owners have given to the entire house and gardens. On the other end of South Street at South Washington is The Yellow Rose Bed and Breakfast. This home began life in 1900 and the present owners have kept the best of that era and incorporated many things that reflect their life in Texas. The tour then moves out of Greenfield to the South Salem area.

   On Morton Road the home of Harold and Judy Schmidt will be open. The reconstruction and remodeling done on this home will amaze you as you see the before and after photos. In the village of South Salem Joe and Vickie Smith will show off their mid 20th century ranch home, a style that began on the West Coast with the name California Ranch and swept the country after World War II. 

   After seeing Vickie’s delight with all things Christmas, you can go back a century to the home of Abby and Landry Roe.This young couple and their families have worked to restore this beautiful brick home from the wrinkles of old age and a fire. They have done a superb job.

   The Tour of Homes has always been a great fundraiser for the Society’s projects and the community has always enjoyed viewing the homes decorated for the holidays and seeing how the interiors of homes reflect their owners’ style.

   Another tradition of the tour is the baked steak dinner available at the Grain and Hay. Dinner is served at the Grain and Hay or can be taken home.

Many people come after church and eat before starting the tour or take a break for lunch after visiting several homes. Dinner will start at 11:30 a.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m. or until sold out(which frequently happens!) The meal consists of baked steak, mashed potatoes, a veggie, rolls, drink and a dessert.

   Anyone who has ever hosted a family dinner or party knows the amount of work involved and imagine what it would be like if you were going to have 100-150 come to your home throughout the afternoon. That is why the Historical Society is so thankful for the people who agree to open their homes at this busy time and help us with this major fundraiser.
