Garden club discusses holiday season

On Nov. 16, 2010, the Hillsboro Garden Club held their monthly meeting at the Katherine Zane Granger Floral Hall on the Highland County Fairgrounds. Pledge of Alligiance and Singing of God Bless America was led by Ed Davis with 19 members in attendance and two guests. Phone tree update with Jackie Cowdrey added to Gloria Wrights listing after calling from Ed or Kay ... weather at command.  A three year treasurer's summary and budget for 2010-2011 prepared by Ruthanna Duff was handed out by President Nancy Baldwin for discussion and thought.  Pat Lawrence moved the money report be accepted and seconded by Dianna Baker.  Motion carried.  Tip for the month was relayed by Nancy Sonner, "When storing your bulbs, dust them with medicated baby powder, drop in a pantyhose leg and hang in a cool dry place."  Roll call was answered with how members are using plant/flowers around their home for the holidays as well as intentions of attending the Christmas Party on Dec. 7, 2010 at the Hillsboro Ponderosa Party House. Twenty-five members answered with Santa delight approaching. Juanita Carson gave hint on her orchid survival care ... five ice cubes a week for moisture. The sharing of a day in the life a typical American where everyday items are made in another country was dialogued by Nancy Baldwin and Larry Moore with the summary including the fact that many of our loved flora has been brought from other lands. Current planting of double tulip packaging was shared/Netherlands by way of Michigan. Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Scholarship information for seniors was distributed to the five Highland County Schools by President Nancy Baldwin with one follow up phone call from Fairfield Counselor. More scholarship information can be retrieved from the website, oagc.org.  Kay Neugebaurer had a multi miniature carnation floral arrangement in a family inherited crystal vase backgrounded by yew evergreen sprigs. With stem trimming, sugar/aspirin feeding, and water changing, she hopes to get more than a month's enjoyment.

Additions to program booklet as OAGC State Convention July 18,19,20 2011 at Shawnee State Partk were made.  Dianna Baker had posted on bulletin board member attendance forms to Hike for Wakeena, Nature Retreat, State Trip to Boston World Floral Show. OAGC contests entries due Dec. 15 are being finalized by Larry Moore, Ruthanna Duff & Pat Lawrence, and Cindy Johnson. Gloria Wright reported on the Christmas Parade Float with riders meeting Saturday the 20th to build the themed winner..."Going to Grandma's" with eleven HGC characters and fun for all participants planned.  Larry Moore reporting that community landscaping recognitions will continue in the 2011 year.  Rose Marie Cowdrey passed out 2011 fair artistic class choices from the November committee meeting.  Resuming regular monthly meetings in March will see an example of an artistic selection given by Rose Marie.  Arlene Huiet's chairmanship with the Membership Committee was given an extra duty with TOURS being on her agenda.  Places to go and learn to be highlighted. President Nancy Baldwin read a listing of 1984/85 programs by HGC for initiative to get out in the world more:  fall walk at Paint Creek Dam & Virginia Morrow's, Christmas Craft at Louise Sprinkle's, Potluck at South Central Power Co., Covered Bridges by Betty Saum, Spring Walk at Miller's Wildflower Sanctuary, Making Wreaths with Jane Stockton of Franklin in Administration Building, Combined Greenfield, Colonial and Hillsboro Garden Clubs County Meeting, Trip to Hatfield Gardens at Stoutsville Ohio, Cox Arboretum, Sycamore Creek Country Club, Japanese Arranging Yellow Springs, Picnic at Roadside Park East 50--bought by Hillsboro Garden Club.  Meeting was adjourned by President Baldwin and Pat Lawrence presented a very professional power point slide show with commentary on Lemon scented plants.

A themed lemon garden landscape could include:  Lemon balm, Lemon verbena, lemon theyme, lemon basil, lemon mint, lemon scented geraniums, eye catching lemon lily and lemon day lily Refreshments of Lemon cake, Chocolate Cherry Cake with whipped topping and chocolate syrup, mixed nuts, peach diet tea, reg sweet tea, or fruit punch were served by Ruthanna Duff and Juanita  Carson with help from Dena Benner.
