Sinking Spring
alumni dinner June 11

   The annual Sinking Spring School alumni dinner will be held Saturday,
June 11 at the Sinking Spring Community Center (the former school
gymnasium).
   The social hour is from 4-6 p.m. Dinner will be a catered buffet served
at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the meal is $12 per person. Reservations need to be

Harwood church hosts
community cookout

A community cookout will be held at Harwood Christian Church, located at the
crossroads of state Routes 134 and 131 between Dodsonville and Buford, will
be held Saturday, June 4 from 4-7 p.m. The menu will include hamburgers, hot
dogs, macaroni and cheese, chips, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw,
various desserts, coffee, iced tea and lemonade. Dine-in or carryout.
Everyone welcome. Freewill donation.

Communications
seminar May 25

   Parents and professionals are invited to attend the “communication as a
second language” seminar at the Hi-TEC Building, 1575 N. High St.,
Hillsboro, on Wednesday, May 25 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Kim Miller,
superintendent for the Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities,
will answer questions about bridging the gap of
communication between home and school.
   Miller is not only a professional in this field but also has a
child with special needs and understands what it is like to be on both sides
of the table. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP to Bonnie Hankey,
Parent Mentor. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance worth two
contact hours.

Brush and Palette Art Guild
marks 54th year June 18-19

   The Brush and Palette Art Guild will celebrate its 54th year June 18 and
19, 1-6 p.m. at the Central Campus of Southern State Community College, 100
Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The guild has been told this is one of the best
shows in southwest Ohio. Over 50 professional and non-professional artists
from Highland County and surrounding counties will display more than 200 paintings. The theme category this year is “Highland County.”
   The event is free, and there will be door prizes of original artwork, a
silent auction, demonstrations and refreshments. A few guild members will
have displays for selling their own artwork, originals and prints.

Highland County Women’s Republican Club meets

   A brunch meeting of the Highland County Women’s Republican Club will
be held Saturday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. at 230 N. High St. in
Hillsboro.

Lynchburg Memorial Day
services May 29

   Lynchburg will be holding a Memorial Day observance on Sunday, May 29 at
noon. The parade route begins at the old school park at the corner of Pearl
and Sycamore streets, and will proceed to the Masonic Cemetery on High
Street. The speaker for the event is Lieutenant Colonel Carran. Inclement
weather will move the observance to the Pearl St. Church of Christ.

AAUW scholarships
   The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will sponsor
scholarships for non-traditional female students. Applications are available
at the libraries in Hillsboro, Greenfield, Lynchburg, Leesburg or from any
AAUW member. The completed application must be returned by July 1. Call

Vendors needed at
Greenfield Farmers Market

   Do you grow produce, make homemade goods or handcrafted items? If so,
join the Greenfield Farmers Market. They are still signing up vendors for
the 2011 season. It’s $30 for the whole summer – every Wednesday 3-6 p.m.

Funds sought for
Veterans Memorial

   The Highland County Commissioners and the VFW are placing a Veterans
Memorial on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. The cost of the memorial is
$50,000. In order to raise the money, they will put any veteran’s name on a
brick for $50. All Highland County veterans are eligible. The committee will
also accept donations. Any veteran who wants to buy a brick may contact the
VFW at 393-0211 or call 393-9638.

Sunnyside Church of Christ
   The Sunnyside Church of Christ invites the public to visit its worship
service. The Bible study and worship service are at the Grange Building of
the Highland County Fairgrounds. The Bible study begins at 9:30 a.m.
Sundays. The worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.

Greenfield citywide
garage sale June 3

   Greenfield will host a citywide garage sale on Friday, June 3 and

Fairfield board
to meet on rehiring
retiring employees

   The Fairfield Local School District Board of Education is giving public
notice in accordance with Section 3307.353 of the Ohio Revised Code that
Shawn Priest and Dianna Coffey will retire and will be seeking re-employment
with the Fairfield Local School District in the same positions following
their service retirement.
   The Board of Education will hold a public meeting on the issue of
re-employing Priest and Coffey at a meeting to be held on June 20 at 6:30
p.m. at the Fairfield Local School District Board Office Conference Room
located at 11611 S.R. 771, Leesburg. The public is invited to attend.

Peebles High School
class of 1961 plans reunion

   The Peebles High School class of 1961 is invited to attend their 50th
high school reunion on May 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the high school. For advanced

Buford alumni meeting May 28
   The 82nd anniversary meeting of the Buford alumni will be held at the
Clay Township Park (old Buford School) on Saturday, May 28. A buffet-style
dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., catered by Lake Manor Restaurant. All
former students of the Buford school are welcome to attend. If you wish to
be on the mailing list and are not currently receiving an invitation, please

HCSO golf outing June 1
   The Highland County Sheriff’s Office’s annual golf tournament will be
held June 1 (rain date, June 8) at the Elks Lodge. The tournament is a
four-person scramble for $200 per team. Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1
p.m. Lunch will be provided by Aramark. All proceeds will benefit the
Highland County Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. Program. Jerry Haag Motors of
Hillsboro is sponsoring a hole in one contest, with a 2011 Buick
presented to the winner. There will also be other raffle items, door prizes

Recovery program
meets on Tuesdays

   The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 7454 Fenner Lane in Hillsboro.

Humane Society
yard sale June 10-11

   The Highland County Humane Society will host its annual yard sale
Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11. Feel free to help make the event a
success by looking in your attics, basements and garages for items you may
wish to donate. (No adult clothing, please.) All proceeds go directly to
benefit the animals at the shelter.

Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings

   The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

Joe Penn Scholarship
Golf Tournament June 4

   St. Mary Catholic School is sponsoring the Joe Penn Scholarship Golf
Tournament on June 4 at the Elks Club in Hillsboro. If you would like to
sponsor a team, the cost is $200 or hole sponsor is $100. Tee times are 8

Open Door
free meal May 28

   The Open Door free meal will be held at the Greenfield United Methodist
Church on Saturday, May 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. The menu will be meat loaf,
macaroni and cheese, slaw, and cookies. Everyone is welcome!

Memorial Day services in
Mowrystown on May 30

   The annual Memorial Day Services will be held in the village of
Mowrystown on Monday, May 30. The parade will begin at 1 p.m. at Whiteoak
High School, and services at the Mowrystown Cemetery will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Buford Memorial Day
ceremony May 30

   The Buford (Clay Township) Memorial Day ceremony will be held Monday,
May 30 at 11 a.m. at the Buford Cemetery. The procession will leave the Clay
Township Park at 10:45 a.m. Anyone who would like to participate
in the parade should be at the park by 10:30 a.m. No animals or ATVs,
please. The ceremony will consist of music by the Whiteoak High School band,
patriotic readings, and a message by the Rev. Hugh Hurley, pastor of the
Buford Church of Christ.
   At noon, the annual cookout begins at the park.

Western Brown H.S.
class of 1979 reunion

   The Western Brown High School class of 1979 reunion will be Sunday, June
12 from 11 a.m.- 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Rural Water Association Park,

Reservations being accepted
for ‘Maggie in Magic Land’
at Magic Waters Theatre

   The 29th summer season of live entertainment at Magic Waters Theatre,
east of Hillsboro, will begin on June 10 when ‘Maggie in Magic Land’ takes
to the stage at the rustic amphitheatre on Cave Road, midway between
Hillsboro and Chillicothe, just off of U.S. 50.
   Reservations are now being accepted for seating on the evenings of June
10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. Call (937) 365-1388 to make reservations.

First Baptist Church
basement sale June 4

   The First Baptist Church, located at the corner of South West and West
Walnut streets in Hillsboro, will hold their Bargain Basement Sale June 4
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Designer clothing, dishes and much more.

Community Action
offers summer meals

The Highland County Community Action Organization, Inc. announces the
sponsorship of the summer food service program for children. Free meals will
be made available to all children 18 years of age and under
or persons over 18 who are determined by a state or local public educational
agency to be mentally or physically disabled. The meals will be provided
without regard to race color, national origin, gender, age or disability,
and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Any
person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any
USDA-related activity should write or call immediately to the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Director, Office of Adjudication, 1400
Independence Ave SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410; or call toll free (866)
632-9992 (voice).
   Individuals who are hearing impaired or have speech disabilities may
