Reflecting on 'the sanctity of lives of tiny humans'
To the editor:
As another election approaches, I am still trying to get over the disappointment of the previous election and the passing of Issue 1. Left-wing organizations spent over $77 million to persuade voters to pass it. But I was naive enough to think Ohioans would value human life so much that the issue would fail.
Abortion is being used as a method of birth control that requires no responsibility by the couple to prevent pregnancy. It is not used as an emergency procedure. In 2022, Ohio had 18,488 abortions performed. The Ohio Department of Health records these statistics, including whether this is a woman’s first, second, third, fourth or fifth abortion.
U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup wrote a factual article for our Press about the scientific proof of the sensation of pain an unborn baby feels at 20 weeks of age. Anyone can read about the fascinating development of tiny humans and how their hands are complete with fingerprints at 45 days of age, and how a heart begins to beat at only 24 days of age.
Jim Thompson also wrote an article for the Press about how in ancient times, unwanted babies were simply left out in the cold to die. It seems we have not progressed in valuing human life. Are we really an advanced civilization?
I am comforted, pleased and proud to live in Highland County. We not only defeated Issue 1, but every county that borders us (Brown, Adams, Clermont, Clinton, Ross, Pike and Fayette) also defeated Issue 1. Could it be that country people have a better understanding of the sanctity of the lives of tiny humans? That’s my opinion.

Save The Children?
Yes Issue 1 was defeated in Highland County. Because it is tied to religion. The abortion opponents said save the children.Yet the children's tax levy failed. A double standard? Abandon those children in foster care? Birth control is a woman's and a man's options to prevent unwanted pregnancy. However when a 10 year old child is raped, she was not expected to be on birth control nor should be. Yes, it is rare a 10 year old girl could become pregnant. I found it illogical to force that child to carry a baby to term. And the medical risks to that child. And other cases of rape or incest. This is pushed by certain religous groups. Practice your faith as your right. But do not impose your values on others who hold opposite viewpoints. Also understand 59% of GOP women support limited abortion rights. Issue 1 passed by the majority of the voters. Not rural counties.
