William H. "Bill" Hope, Jr., 72, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at his home.
He was born Sept. 17, 1938 in Cincinnati, the son of the late William Hale and Catherine Ann Fisher Hope.
Mr. Hope was a retired over-the-road truck driver working for Ryder, P.I.E. and Roadway Express for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of McNicholas High School in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Highland and Brown Counties Pilot Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Bill had been a flight instructor for over 40 years, serving the Blue Ash, Clermont County and Highland County Airports; he had attended the Experimental Aircraft Fly-In at Oshkosh, Wis. for over 20 consecutive years and in 1985 flew his Cardinal RG, single-engine prop plane from Clermont County Airport across the Atlantic to London and returned, a feat that few amateur pilots have accomplished.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Chandler Hope, whom he had married on April 7, 2001 in Wyoming, Ohio; two daughters, Angel Hope of Eastgate and Collette Wagner of California, Ohio; one granddaughter, Karissa Wagner of California, Ohio; one stepson, Scott (Heather) Francis of Madisonville, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Rebecca (Paul) Mason of Norwood, Ohio; one brother, David Hope of Blanchester; and the mother of his children, Patricia Hope of Eastgate.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at the Highland County Airport, 9500 North Shore Drive, Hillsboro. Chaplain Major Doug Campbell will officiate. Military honors will follow, presented by the Highland County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 29 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
